Catullo spent 2009-10 season as assistant at Millersville University

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Mike Catullo will become the volunteer assistant coach for the University of Maryland wrestling team, head coach Kerry McCoy announced Thursday.

Catullo comes to Maryland after having spent the 2009-10 season as the volunteer assistant at Millersville University, where he helped guide the team to a third-place finish in the East Regional. Two Millersville wrestlers qualified for the 2010 NCAA Championships.

"I am very excited to have Mike join our staff. He brings a great work ethic and a wealth of experience to our program," said McCoy. "I look forward to working with him, and I know he will have an immediate positive impact."

Millersville also achieved success off the mat under Catullo's tutelage. The Marauders received a NCAA Public Recognition Award for excellence in the classroom as part of the NCAA's Academic Performance Program, one of only 10 programs in the nation to receive the award.

Before joining the staff at Millersville, Catullo was the top assistant at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa., from 2004-09.

While at Franklin and Marshall, Catullo helped lead the Diplomats to their first NCAA qualifier in 11 years. In 2005-06 Catullo helped guide the team to an 11-5 finish, the best at Franklin and Marshall since 1980.

Catullo also assisted in the development of "The Friends of F&M Wrestling" initiative and had an active role in securing a bid and sponsorship for the 2008 Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association championship at Franklin and Marshall. He was a member of the EIWA and NCAA ranking committee and also assisted with the women's golf team while at Franklin and Marshall.

Prior to his time at Franklin and Marshall, Catullo spent two years at Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D., as a graduate assistant, earning a master's degree in education with an emphasis in health, physical education and coaching. Catullo coached six NCAA Division II All-Americans and 12 NWCA All-Academic honorees, while also leading NSU to a top-15 finish at the NCAA Division II Championships.

Catullo was a member of the West Virginia University wrestling team from 1997-2002. During his time in Morgantown, WVU posted two top-10 finishes in 1998 and 1999, placed sixth at the National Duals in 1998 and won a pair of Eastern Wrestling League dual-meet championships in 1998 and 2002. Maryland Wrestling Reached New Heights in 2009-10

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Entering the 2009-10 season, the University of Maryland wrestling team had its sights set high after returning the core of the team that won the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship and finished 10th at the NCAA Championships the year before.

Maryland entered the season with a consensus top-10 ranking, with some publications putting the Terps at No. 6, the highest preseason ranking in program history.

The Terps faced a grueling schedule which included an early season test with No. 4 Cornell, along with trips to the Northeast Duals, Midlands Championships and the NWCA National Duals. It would be one of the tougher schedules in the country, but Maryland would ultimately respond by setting a school record with 19 dual meet wins.

Along the way, the Terrapin program rose to new heights, garnering unprecedented national and local attention thanks to their performances on and off the mat.

The Terps opened the season at the Buffalo Open, where James Knox, Steven Bell, Kyle John and Mike Letts all took home individual titles, getting the year off to a good start.

Maryland then dominated two home dual meets against Drexel and York, winning by a combined score of 92-6. That set up a crucial matchup with fourth-ranked Cornell, a program long viewed as one of the best on the east coast.

Trailing 17-9 with only two matches remaining, Hudson Taylor and Patrick Gilmore helped stage a stunning comeback. Taylor pinned his opponent - fifth-ranked Cam Simaz - to bring the team score to 17-15. Gilmore then pushed No. 12 Josh Arnone into overtime, where he recorded a takedown for a sudden victory and an 18-17 Maryland win.

The Terps rode that momentum to a second-place finish at the Body Bar Invitational and then won two of three matches at the Northeast Duals, defeating Northern Colorado and No. 12 Lehigh, while falling to No. 10 Central Michigan.

Maryland ran its record to 7-1 after blowout wins over conference foe North Carolina and Penn in early December, leaving the team confident heading into the Midlands Championships.

At the Midlands - where many of the best teams in the country compete - the Terps placed two wrestlers in the finals for the first time in program history. Alex Krom became the first Maryland wrestler to win at the Midlands and the Terps finished sixth as a team, the highest finish in school history.

One of the toughest stretches of the schedule continued a week and a half after the Midlands as Maryland traveled to Cedar Falls, Iowa, to compete in the National Duals. In their first ever appearance at the event, the Terps finished seventh after defeating Northern Iowa, Buffalo and No. 22 Wisconsin, while falling to No. 2 Iowa State and No. 8 Cornell.

A week later Maryland was back on the road, this time to Ashland, Ohio, for three tough matches in the Wendy's Duals. Wrestling all three matches in one day, the Terrapins responded with wins over Purdue, Ashland and No. 14 Kent State to run their record to 13-3.

With three starters out due to injury, Maryland dropped a heated match with rival Navy in Annapolis on Jan. 22, but then reeled off six straight wins to end the season. A victory over No. 24 Virginia in the season finale in Charlottesville gave the Terps the school record for wins in a season and sealed off a 4-0 run through ACC action.

The Terps fell painfully short of a third straight title at the ACC Championships, finishing second with 80.5 points to Virginia's 85. Maryland competed in the tourney without the services of former ACC Champ Mike Letts, who was lost for the season with a knee injury. Still, Bell, Krom and Taylor won individual titles and six Terps automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships. Bell became the program's second three-time ACC champ since 1988, while Taylor was named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.

At the NCAA Championships in Omaha, Neb., Taylor became the program's first ever three-time All-American with a fourth-place finish and Bell became the school's fifth two-time All-American with an eighth place finish. Maryland came away with its second consecutive top-20 team finish and its second consecutive year with multiple All-Americans. Two of the teams Maryland defeated in the regular season - Cornell and Wisconsin - finished second and fourth at the NCAA Championships, respectively.

Although the season was over, the individual accolades were not. Taylor was named ACC Wrestler of the Year for the second time in his illustrious career after finishing 42-4 on the season and setting the school's single-season record with 24 pinfalls. He would also later be named ACC Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was awarded a post-graduate scholarship.

Bell, Krom, John and Josh Asper joined Taylor on the All-ACC team, while John, Knox, Matt Bogusz, Dallas Brown and Corey Peltier joined Taylor on the All-ACC Academic team.

The Terrapins will have to begin a new chapter in 2010-11 with the departure of stalwarts such as Taylor, Bell, Krom, Knox and Mookie Golden. But with promising young talent waiting in the wings, Maryland appears ready to continue its steady rise among the nation's elite wrestling programs.
Maryland Wrestling Finalizes 2010 Recruiting Class

Class ranked in top 10 nationally by Intermat

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland wrestling head coach Kerry McCoy today announced the signing of seven student-athletes during the spring signing period, finalizing Maryland's 2010 class.

McCoy and his staff went to nearby talent to fill several needs, signing student-athletes from Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and New York. Four of the signees are state champions.

"I am very excited about our incoming class," said McCoy. "These guys are a perfect complement to the class we brought in last year, adding depth and experience to our program. When you graduate a class like we just did, it's a challenge to keep the ball rolling.

The Terps said goodbye to four of the most talented seniors in school history this year with the graduation of Hudson Taylor, Alex Krom, Steven Bell and James Knox, all of whom were starters on last year's team. Maryland finished in the top 20 at the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive year, while Taylor and Bell earned All-America status with top-8 finishes.

Maryland, which also signed three recruits in the fall, has positioned itself to continue competing on the highest level with a class that Intermat ranks in the top 10 nationally.

"This class will definitely keep us on track as one of the top programs in the nation," said McCoy. "To be recognized as a top-10 recruiting class is very special for us, and we intend to get the most out of these guys."

No. 9 Maryland Wrestling Rolls on Senior Day
Terps win fifth straight and ninth out of last 10

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - It was a fitting final home match for a senior class that is likely to go down as the best in Maryland wrestling history. The Terps dominated Hofstra 34-6 on Sunday at Comcast Pavilion in front of 743 fans, in the process setting the school record with 18 wins this season.

Seniors Hudson Taylor, Steven Bell, Alex Krom and James Knox all notched victories for the No. 9 Terps as Maryland improved its home record to a perfect 7-0 this season. Maryland, a program rich in history with 20 conference titles to its name, had twice reached the 17-win mark, but this year's team set the record against one of the toughest schedules in the nation. The Terps have won five straight and nine of their last ten matches.

"We've talked about this team being one of the most successful in program history and this further solidifies that statement," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "We still have a chance to win one more and anytime you can have this much success against such a tough schedule it's a huge accomplishment. It's a real credit it to what these guys have done."

The Terps (18-4) won eight out of 10 matches against the Pride (5-11-2) and received bonus points in four matches, as Taylor, Bell, and Jon Kohler recorded pinfalls, while Alex Krom won by major decision.

Kohler set the tone in the first match at 149 pounds, methodically wearing down Ryan Colmer before recording a pin 6:29 into the match.

No. 19 Jonny Bonilla-Bowman, one of two ranked wrestlers for Hofstra, got the Pride on the scoreboard with a slim 15-11 decision over Kyle John in a back-and-forth match at 157 pounds.

No. 14 Josh Asper responded in the next match by defeating Hofstra's other ranked wrestler, No. 17 P.J. Gillespie. The grapplers battled through a scoreless first period, but Asper countered Gillespie's escape with a takedown in the second period to go ahead 2-1 heading into the final stanza. The redshirt freshman, now 29-6 this season, picked up an escape and another takedown in the third period and earned an additional point for riding time to take a 6-1 decision. Asper has won nine consecutive matches.

Bradley Nielson then extended Maryland's lead to 12-3 with a 10-3 decision over Jon Rothman at 174 pounds.

At 184, Corey Peltier dropped a 2-0 decision as Ben Clymer recorded a takedown in the final seconds, but Maryland won the next five matches.

Taylor, ranked third in the country at 197 pounds, recorded his NCAA Division 1-best 22nd pin of the season against Anthony Tortora. The two-time All-American pinned his opponent in 2:35, bringing his win total to 35 this season, which also leads all Division 1 wrestlers. Taylor, who never lost a home match in his career, is one pin shy of tying the single-season pins record of 23 set by Jake Stork in 2002-03.

Patrick Gilmore earned a 6-3 decision over Paul Snyder at heavyweight and Knox earned a hard-fought 4-3 decision over Jamie Franco at 125 pounds as the Terps increased their lead to 24-6.

Bell, who only lost one match at home in his career, pinned Luke Vaith in 4:46 at 133 pounds. A two-time ACC Champion, Bell has 97 wins in his career and is ranked 12th in the nation.

Krom finished things off for Maryland with a 10-2 major decision over Tyler Banks at 141 pounds. Ranked ninth in the nation, Krom won his fourth-straight match and has amassed 106 wins in his career, second on the team only to Taylor's 158.

The senior class consisting of Taylor, Bell, Krom, Knox, Andrew Bradley, Rich DiPietro, Mookie Golden and Casey Marwine recorded its 68th win in the last five seasons. The class also has two ACC titles to its name, and will compete for a third straight March 6 at the ACC Championship in Raleigh, N.C.

"For years to come people are going to talk about this class," said McCoy. "They've etched themselves in the record books in several areas. They're the leaders of the most successful years in program history. We're going to try to outperform ourselves each year but right now they're at the top of the ladder."

Maryland has an important match for conference seeding at Virginia on Saturday, Feb. 20. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Terps win nine of 10 matches en route to 35-6 victory

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The 10th-ranked University of Maryland wrestling team earned its 16th win of the season Friday night, dominating George Mason by winning nine of 10 matches en route to a 35-6 victory.

At 16-4 on the season, Maryland is one victory shy of tying the school record for wins in a season. The Terps went 17-6 in 1990 and 17-5 in 2007.

"I feel good about how the guys wrestled and the results we got," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "They didn't make it easy for us, but what I'm really happy about is our guys scored a lot of points and really fought hard. We want guys to push the pace and score a lot of points and that's what they did."

No. 11 Steven Bell got a 12-4 major decision over Denny Herndon and Matt Bogusz took a 12-3 major over Jaaziah Bethea at 141 pounds, as Maryland took an 11-0 lead.

George Mason looked like they would win the match at 149 pounds as Brandon Bucher took a 7-0 lead over Jon Kohler with just over a minute left in the first period. But Kohler fought all the way back and won the match 11-9.

"We're never out of a match," said McCoy. "Jon could have rolled over, but he kept fighting and got the win, and that was a real spark for us. That's exactly the type of effort I'm looking for."

Kyle John kept the Terps rolling with an 11-5 decision over Aaron Keeton at 157 pounds, and No. 15 Josh Asper increased Maryland's lead to 21-0 with a 15-4 major decision at 165 pounds.

No. 7 Maryland Wrestling Breezes By NC State, Duke

Terps improve to 3-0 in conference duals

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Following a disappointing loss to Navy less than 24 hours ago, the seventh-ranked University of Maryland wrestling team wasted little time in showing its mettle against conference foes North Carolina State and Duke. In front of 814 fans at Comcast Pavilion, the Terrapins downed the Wolfpack 30-10 and handed Duke a 32-9 defeat to improve to 3-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference action.

The Terps (15-4), whose last home loss was on Jan. 11, 2009, won seven out of 10 matches against both NC State (5-8) and Duke (2-4) to extend their winning streak at Comcast Pavilion to eight matches. Maryland was led by six wrestlers - Mookie Golden, Kyle John, No. 15 Josh Asper, Corey Peltier, No. 3 Hudson Taylor and Patrick Gilmore - who all went 2-0 on the day.

"It's good to see the guys improve and make adjustments from match to match," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "There are still areas where we need to improve, but I thought we fought harder and looked better today than we did last night."

Early on, the Terps looked like they would cruise to a win against NC State, as James Knox (125 pounds) and Golden (133) took major decisions in the first two matches of the day.

Knox used a late flurry in the final period to turn what had been a close match into an 11-2 major decision. Golden used the momentum to dominate at 133 pounds, scoring a takedown and a near-fall early in the match. Golden didn't allow his opponent, Scott Norris, to score a point and took a 9-0 major decision to give Maryland an early 8-0 lead.

But the Wolfpack won the next two matches to get within two points of the Terps. At 141 pounds, Matt Bogusz battled back from a 7-2 deficit against Dale Shull of NC State, tying the match at 9-9 late in the third period, but ultimately lost 12-9. No. 22 Bobby Ward of NC State took an 8-2 decision over Dex Lederer, who was wrestling in his first career dual meet for the Terps, as the Wolfpack brought the score to 8-6.

Maryland got some breathing room after John earned a 14-7 decision over Juan Stimpson at 157 pounds. John, who improved to 24-8 on the season, got out to an early 7-1 lead and cruised from there.

At 165 pounds, Asper provided another dominant performance for the Terps by controlling his match with Ray Ward throughout. Asper had near-falls twice in the final stanza, and went on to shutout Ward 11-0 as Maryland increased its lead to 15-6.

Owen Smith lost 11-2 to Quinton Godley at 174 pounds, but Peltier pinned Cedric Moore in 2:22 at 184 pounds as Maryland put the match out of reach.

Taylor won by forfeit and Gilmore got a hard-fought 3-0 win over Eloheim Palma to bring the final tally to 30-10.

Against Duke, the Terps found themselves in a similar position - leading 8-6 after four matches.

At 125 pounds, Peter Terrezza got the Blue Devils out to an early lead with a 10-4 decision over Pat Strizki.

Golden gave Maryland its first lead with a 15-0 technical fall to bring the team score to 5-3 in favor of Maryland. Golden, a senior who has wrestled in place of No. 11 Steven Bell in spurts throughout the season, proved to be a more than capable replacement on Saturday. He earned nine points total for Maryland on the day and didn't allow an opponent to score on him.

Bogusz nearly pinned Mike Bell in the first period of the matchup at 141 pounds and went on to an 11-5 decision. Chris Piccolella of Duke took an 8-6 decision over Lederer at 149 pounds, but the Blue Devils had to forfeit matches at 157 and 165 pounds, giving Maryland a commanding 20-6 lead.

Peltier, Taylor and Gilmore all capped off their perfect days by winning the final three matches. Peltier took a 7-3 decision over Diego Bencomo at 184, Taylor pinned John Barone in 1:12 at 197 and Gilmore earned an 8-2 decision over Robert Holbrook at heavyweight.

"I just told the guys, there are probably only two or three teams in the country that have gone through as tough of a stretch over the last month that we have," said McCoy. "To come out of that stretch nearly unscathed tells me we're ahead of schedule."

Maryland next returns to action on Friday, Jan. 29 when it travels to Fairfax, Va., to take on George Mason at 7:00 p.m.

No. 7 Maryland Wrestling Falls At Navy, 19-14
Terps fall to 13-4 on the season; host NC State and Duke tomorrow at Comcast Pavilion

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The seventh-ranked University of Maryland wrestling team fell 19-14 to Navy in front of 2,825 fans at Halsey Field House in Annaplis, Md. on Friday night.

The Terps, ranked seventh in the newly released National Wrestling Coaches Association/USA Today/Coaches Poll and eighth in Intermat's rankings, were wrestling without several starters and were unable to overcome a gritty performance from the Midshipmen.

Navy won six of 10 matches, including four of five in the lightweight matches, to come up with the upset victory. The Midshipmen improved to 3-1 on the season while the Terps fell to 13-4.

"It's a frustrating loss," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "It's tough to win against a good team with all your starters and even more difficult without some of your starters when you get outfought. You can't teach fight and belief. Hopefully it's that wakeup call that we need."

The match started at 197 pounds, where No. 3 Hudson Taylor had little trouble dispatching Charles Carafano. Taylor improved to 30-2 this season with a 14-2 major decision to give the Terps an early 4-0 lead.

Wrestling against No. 5 Scott Steele of Navy, Patrick Gilmore kept the match scoreless through one period. Steele recorded two takedowns in the second period and took a 5-1 lead heading into the final period, a lead that Gilmore couldn't overcome. Gilmore recorded a point for an escape in the final stanza but Steele was able to come out on top 6-2 to bring the team score to 4-3 in favor of Maryland.

Navy then won four of the next five matches to extend its lead to 16-7. At 125 pounds, Aaron Kalil got out to a 6-0 lead over James Knox and finished with a 7-1 decision as Navy took a 6-4 lead. Mookie Golden, wrestling in place of No. 11 Steven Bell at 133 pounds, earned a 6-4 decision over Pat McCaffrey to help Maryland regain the lead, 7-6.

Matt Bogusz, wrestling at 141 pounds in place of No. 9 Alex Krom, trailed 3-1 to Matt Pagan heading into the third period. Pagan got three takedowns in the final period as Navy retook a lead it wouldn't relinquish, 9-7.

Glenn Shober won by major decision, 15-4, over Jon Kohler at 149 pounds and No. 8 Bryce Saddoris knocked off Kyle John, 9-7, at 157 pounds as Navy extended its lead to 16-7.

"We needed to get one more match and we didn't get it done," said McCoy. "From 125 [pounds] to 157 [pounds] they won four out of five. We didn't seem to have the same fight that we had last weekend."

No. 15 Josh Asper took a dominant 14-4 major decision over Robby Neill at 165 pounds, but Owen Smith, who filled in for No. 6 Mike Letts, fell to Matt DeMichiel at 174 pounds as Navy put the match out of reach. The Midshipmen led 19-11 heading into the final match.

Corey Peltier defeated Greg Priouleau 8-2 at 184 pounds, but it wasn't enough as Maryland suffered its first loss of the season to an unranked opponent.

"Hopefully the guys can shake it off and be ready for tomorrow," said McCoy. "Tonight, this match is the most important thing, but as soon as we get to Comcast tomorrow, our matches with North Carolina State and Duke are the most important things. It's very important for conference seeding that we wrestle well, so hopefully the guys decide they are ready to fight for the team, for the school and for themselves."

Maryland hosts NC State at noon and Duke at 2 p.m. tomorrow in Comcast Pavilion. The Terps will honor all faculty and staff, as well as military members for their service and support at Saturday's matches.

*Parking Advisory*
The wrestling match with Duke was moved from 3 p.m. to 2 p.m. in order to accommodate wrestling fans who would like to park in the lots surrounding Comcast Center prior to the men's basketball game against NC State at 6 p.m. All fans wishing to park in lot 4b should arrive there prior to 2 p.m. Furthermore, University Parking will not begin ticketing and towing in lot 4b on Saturday until 4 p.m., in order to allow wrestling fans to park there. No. 7 Maryland Wrestling Ready For National Duals
Terps head back to Midwest for shot at nation's best competition

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The seventh-ranked University of Maryland wrestling team continues through one of the toughest parts of the schedule this season when it heads to Cedar Falls, Iowa, to compete in the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals on Saturday and Sunday.

The Terps finished sixth at the Midlands Championships last weekend, the schools best finish ever at the event. Facing competition from some of the nation's toughest teams, including Iowa, Iowa State and Central Michigan, among others, Maryland had three placers and its first ever individual champion. Alex Krom dominated the competition at 141 pounds, going 5-0 to claim the open title. Steven Bell finished runner-up at 133 pounds, while Hudson Taylor was fifth at 197.

Maryland will face much of the same competition at the National Duals, but rather than an open tournament, teams will go head-to-head in dual meets.

"I am very excited for this weekend," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "We've had some great workouts the last few days and we'll need to be sharp and wrestle to our potential this weekend. If we do that we are going to do well."

Action gets underway Saturday at noon Eastern, when Maryland, which is seeded No. 7, takes on tournament host Northern Iowa. The Terps will face either No. 2 Iowa State or Bloomsburg in the second round at 4 p.m.
Maryland Wrestling Finishes 6th at Midlands
Krom wins individual title to lead Terps

Evanston, Ill. – Alex Krom won the individual championship at 141 pounds and the University of Maryland wrestling team finished sixth at the Midlands Championships, its best finish ever at the prestigious tournament.

The Terps had three wrestlers place, as Steven Bell finished runner-up at 133 pounds and Hudson Taylor took fifth at 197 pounds. Maryland finished sixth despite wrestling with eight entrants rather than 10, as Mike Letts and Patrick Gilmore were unable to compete.

“It’s a pretty good showing for us,” said head coach Kerry McCoy. “We’re not overly excited about it. To have only eight guys compete and finish sixth is pretty good, and it’s a good barometer to see where we are. We have some work to do to get ready for National Duals and correct some errors, but I’m happy with the way our guys are wrestling at this point.”

Krom had a dominant run, going 5-0 with three pinfalls and one major decision. The 10th ranked wrestler in the country, Krom took a 9-2 decision over one-seed Jimmy Kennedy of Illinois in the final, becoming the first Maryland wrestler to win a title at the Midlands. To get there, he pinned No. 19 Trevor Melde of Rutgers in the quarterfinals in 1:45 and No. 16 Ryan Prater of Illinois in the semifinals in 2:00.

Bell won his first four matches to reach the finals, including a semifinal win over No. 15 Kelly Kubec of Oregon State, but was defeated in the championship match by fourth-seeded and No. 12 Tyler Graff of Wisconsin.

Taylor, meanwhile, found himself wrestling a post-collegiate entrant in the semifinals. Because the Midlands Championships is an open tournament, wrestlers of all ages are eligible to enter. Wynn Michalak, who wrestled at Central Michigan, bested Taylor 9-5 in the semifinal round. The loss, however, does not count towards Taylor’s record. From there Taylor went on to drop a close match with fourth-seeded and No. 7 Trevor Brandvoid of Wisconsin. He then pinned Patrick Bond of Illinois in 3:55 to take fifth place.

The Terps are next in action on Jan. 9 when they compete in the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
No. 7 Maryland 32, Pennsylvania 6
No. 7 Terps off to best start since 1994-95

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 7 University of Maryland wrestling team returned to College Park to compete at home for the first time in over a month and didn't disappoint, easily defeating Penn 32-6 in front of 436 fans Friday night at Comcast Pavilion.

The Terps won eight of 10 matches to improve their record to 7-1 on the season, which marks the best start by Maryland since it opened the season 9-1 in 1994-95.

"I'm very happy with how the first part of the season has gone," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "Obviously the perfectionist in me wishes we were undefeated and thinks that we could and should be undefeated. But I'm really happy with where we are because we're not wrestling our best and we're having good results, and our guys are improving every week. The situations that are costing us matches are tactical, but there aren't too many people we're going against that are just straight better than us."

The Terps were out to a lead before anyone had the chance to wrestle. A forfeit by Penn at heavyweight gave Maryland a 6-0 edge entering the 125-pound match between James Knox and Mark Rappo. After Knox got an early takedown, Rappo countered with a reversal to knot the match at two. The two battled back and forth for much of the match, and with the score tied at four late in the third period, Knox earned two points for a takedown and picked up one more in riding time, giving him the 7-4 decision and a 9-0 lead for Maryland.

Penn pulled the match to 9-6 by taking two close decisions at 133 and 141 pounds, but that would be the only points the Quakers would earn.

Jon Kohler earned an early takedown for a 2-0 lead in his match against Troy Hernandez, and nearly pinned him midway through the second period. In control for most of the match, Kohler took a 10-3 decision to increase Maryland's lead to 12-6.

At 157 pounds Kyle John dominated Jake Hunter throughout the match on his way to a 16-4 major decision. Ranked No. 19 in the nation, Kohler had five takedowns as Maryland stretched the lead to 16-6.

Josh Asper had perhaps the toughest test in taking on Gabe Burak at 165 pounds, who entered the match 18-2 on the season. Asper nearly ended the match by pin in the first period, but a reversal by Burak kept him alive. The two battled back and forth for the final two periods, but Asper came out on top with a 12-7 decision.

No. 6 Mike Letts clinched the win for Maryland by earning a 7-4 decision over Scott Giffin at 174 pounds. Corey Peltier followed that with a 9-0 major decision over Harrison Cook at 184 pounds, setting up the finale at 197 pounds.

No. 3 Hudson Taylor, who last week set the Maryland career record for wins (140) and pinfalls (72), needed just 49 seconds to pin Micah Burak. It was the 14th pin of the season for Taylor, who ran his record to 18-0.

Maryland gets two weeks off for finals and Christmas break before returning to action on Dec. 27 at the Wilkes Open in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Two days later, the Terps head to Evanston Ill. to compete at Midlands.

Maryland's Taylor Named ACC Wrestler of the Week

Third-ranked senior earns honor for the second time in three weeks

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - All-America senior Hudson Taylor has claimed his second Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week honor of the 2009-10 season after a weekend in which he defeated three fellow nationally-ranked wrestlers and became the program's all-time leader in career victories and pins.

Taylor set the school record for career pins by picking up four to bring his collegiate total to 72. The senior helped the seventh-ranked Terps to a 41-0 ACC season-opening victory over North Carolina on Friday by pinning No. 11 Dennis Drury, which brought Taylor's career pin total to 69, tying him with Jake Stork for most in school history.

Taylor broke the record on Sunday in the Penn State Open. The third-ranked wrestler in the country went 5-0 to claim the title at 197 pounds, winning three matches by pin and two matches over ranked opponents. Taylor's record is now 17-0 on the season, with 13 of those victories coming by pin. Taylor's wins in the Penn State open included an 11-5 decision over No. 19 Matthew Wilps of Pittsburgh and a pin of Virginia's 15th-ranked Brent Jones, the ACC's defending champion in the 197-pound weight class and the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the 2009 ACC Championships.

A two-time All-American, Taylor also set the Maryland career wins record with his stellar two days of work. The Pennington, N.J., native now has 140, beating the previous mark of 139 set by Brandon York (1998-2002), who was a four-time ACC Champion as well as a four-time NCAA qualifier.

Maryland plays host to Pennsylvania on Friday in Comcast Pavilion at 7:00 p.m. Friday will be Greek/Campus organization night, with the largest fraternity/sorority or campus organization winning a prize.
Maryland's Taylor Wins Title At Penn State Open

Senior now owns Maryland career wins, pinfalls records

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Third-ranked Hudson Taylor won five matches, including three by pinfall, to take the 197-pound title Sunday at the Penn State Open and become the winningest wrestler in school history.

Combined with a win in Friday's dual meet against North Carolina, Taylor won six matches over the weekend, bringing his career win total to 140. That surpassed Brandon York's record of 139 wins, achieved from 1998-2002. York, who wrestled at 141 pounds, was a four-time NCAA qualifier and the only wrestler in Maryland history to win four ACC Championships.

Taylor, who tied the Maryland career pinfall record of 69 on Friday against North Carolina, brought his career total to 72, breaking the record set by Jake Stork (1999-2003). The senior from Pennington, N.J., has 13 pins this season. Stork had a single-season record 23 pinfalls in 2002-03.

"Hudson put himself on pace early in his career to be one of the best Maryland's ever had," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "This weekend he established that with the pins record and the most career wins record."

Taylor has improved steadily over his five seasons in College Park, increasing his win total each year. He won 19 matches while redshirting in 2005-06, 29 as a redshirt freshman, 37 as a sophomore, and 38 as a junior last season.

"Hudson has a desire to be the best," said McCoy. "He sets his mind to something and goes and gets it, and he is one of the best I have seen at doing that. He set his mind on pinning every one he wrestles. He put the work in last spring and summer, going to the Olympic training center and wrestling against elite-level guys. Every day he goes out there, he goes out to get takedowns and pins. He's been able to make that correlation between the way he practices and the way he competes."

Taylor won his second open title of the season by going 5-0 at the Penn State Open. After dispatching Jake Glore of Missouri 5-2 in the first round, Taylor broke the pinfalls record against Kyle Sanders of Ohio, getting the pin in just 2:19. He picked up another pin in the next round and earned an 11-5 decision over No. 19 Matthew Wilps of Pittsburgh in the semifinals. Fittingly, Taylor pinned No. 15 Brent Jones of Virginia in 1:51 to win the title and earn his 140th career victory.

A two-time All-American, Taylor is a perfect 17-0 on the season. He finished third at the NCAA Championships each of the past two seasons, and is only the fourth repeat All-American in Maryland history. Taylor has a chance to become the first three-time All-American in school history.
No. 7 Maryland Wrestling Defeats North Carolina, 41-0
Taylor ties school record for career pinfalls

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The seventh-ranked University of Maryland wrestling team avenged last season's regular season loss to North Carolina by opening conference play with a 41-0 victory over the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Friday night.

Maryland (6-1, 1-0 ACC) dominated from the beginning, winning all ten matches.

"It feels good to win this way after they beat us last year," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "We're doing the right things and continuing to work hard to get better and put ourselves in the position we need to be in."

On paper, the Terps looked to have the advantage in the early matches while the Tar Heels looked to hold an edge in the middle weights. Maryland opened by getting major decisions in each of the first two matches before No. 11 Alex Krom went to overtime to defeat Mike Rappo. Maryland held an 11-0 lead going into the matchup at 149 pounds, Jon Kohler widened the lead for Maryland by taking a 10-8 decision over No. 12 Nick Stabile. Kyle John followed that up at 157 with a major decision over No. 12 Thomas Scotton, putting Maryland completely in control.

Josh Asper (165) and Corey Peltier (184) both got close wins, while No. 6 Mike Letts (174) earned an 18-3 technical fall over Thomas Ferguson.

No. 3 Hudson Taylor recorded the 69th pin of his career, tying Jake Stork's school record. The senior from Pennington, N.J., is now 12-0 on the season, winning 10 of those matches by pin.

Maryland is back in action on Sunday as a number of Terps travel to State College, Pa., to compete in the Penn State Open.

Maryland to Open ACC Action Friday at North Carolina
No. 7 Terps enter conference action with 5-1 record

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The seventh-ranked University of Maryland wrestling team opens Atlantic Coast Conference play Friday at 7:00 p.m. as they travel to Chapel Hill to take on North Carolina.

The Terps have had great success recently in conference action, having won the past two ACC championships. North Carolina, however, took a 19-15 decision last season that ended Maryland's 10-match winning streak in ACC duals.

"I'm really looking forward to this match," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "They have a good team and a lot of tough individuals, so we need to be ready. This is our first ACC match of the season and I expect it to set the tone for the rest of the conference duals."

Having already faced three ranked teams, the Terps have challenged themselves early in the season. Maryland enters the contest with a 5-1 dual record, including wins over No. 4 Cornell and No. 12 Lehigh. Six of Maryland's 10 starters have won individual championships at open meets since the season began on Nov. 1.

Maryland should have the advantage in the early matches against North Carolina. James Knox (12-4) has wrestled well recently, having beaten No. 15 Tony Mustari of Northern Colorado last weekend at the Northeast Duals. No. 8 Steven Bell (9-1) takes on Jeremy Shaw (6-3) at 133 and No. 11 Alex Krom (4-2) faces either Mike Rappo (4-2) or Danny Lopes (7-2) at 141.

The Tar Heels have three ranked wrestlers, including the No. 12 wrestler at 149 and 157 pounds. If the Terps can get through the middle weights with some success, they should be able to put the match away. In No. 6 Mike Letts, No. 3 Hudson Taylor, and No. 20 Patrick Gilmore, Maryland sends ranked wrestlers to the mat in three of the final four matches.

Following the dual meet Friday, a number of Maryland wrestlers will head to State College, Pa., to compete in the Penn State Open on Sunday. Rich DiPietro, Owen Duffy, Bradley Nielson, Lou Ruland, Owen Smith and Hudson Taylor will compete attached, while a much larger group will compete unattached: Eric Beverly, Christian Boley, Joey Boone, Dallas Brown, Andrik Cruz, Domenic Derobertis, Charles Golden, Ryan Gray, Timothy Marcoux, Shawn Mazzarone, Danny Orem, Bryan Osorio, Jimmy Sheptock and Pat Strizki.

DiPietro Selected to ACC Leadership Conference
Junior Rich DiPietro has been selected to represent the University of Maryland at the 2010 ACC Leadership Conference. DiPietro will join approximately 70 other students from ACC schools in a three-day leadership workshop with a theme of social change. The conference, which will be held at Florida State University, will aim to tackle such current societal issues as discrimination, environmental justice, access to healthcare and homelessness.

Maryland Wrestling Wins Two of Three at Northeast Duals
Taylor goes 3-0 to remain undefeated

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 6 University of Maryland wrestling team won two of three dual meets today at the Northeast Duals in Troy, N.Y., claiming victory over Northern Colorado and No. 12 Lehigh while falling to No. 10 Central Michigan.

The Terps moved their record to 5-1 on the season, including 2-1 against ranked opponents.

"I'm happy where the team is right now because I know we have time to get better," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "I was happy with the way we wrestled against Northern Colorado and Lehigh. Obviously you never like to lose but sticking with a team like Central Michigan when you're not wrestling your best shows a lot."

Maryland started the day at 9:15 a.m. and wasted little time putting away Northern Colorado. James Knox opened the day by knocking off No. 15 Tony Mustari 2-1 and the Terps won nine of 10 matches en route to a 35-3 victory.

Central Michigan boasted six wrestlers ranked in the top 20 of their weight divisions and outlasted the Terps 21-16. With the Chippewas out to an early 9-0 lead, No. 7 Alex Krom took an 11-3 major decision over Ryan Cubberly to bring the score to 9-4, but Central Michigan took four of the next five matches to go ahead 21-7 and put the match out of reach. No. 3 Hudson Taylor recorded the 68th pinfall of his career - one short of tying Jake Stork's school record of 69 - over Eric Simaz. Patrick Gilmore continued to perform well at heavyweight for the Terps by taking a 2-1 decision over No. 9 Jarod Trice.

The Terps capped the day with a win over Lehigh and former Maryland head coach Pat Santoro. Maryland won the first four matches and seven of 10 overall for a 22-12 win that was never really in doubt.

Knox took a 4-0 decision over John McDonald to open the match and No. 7 Steven Bell earned a 6-1 decision over No. 18 Matt Fisk at 133. Krom got a 5-4 decision over No. 12 Seth Ciasulli at 141, and Jon Kohler (149) defeated Joey Napoli 5-3 to give the Terps an early 12-0 lead.

After Sean Bilodeau pinned Kyle John to bring the score to 12-6, Josh Asper took a 7-6 decision over Mike Galante and No. 4 Mike Letts beat No. 18 Robert Hamlin 5-3 to give the Terps an 18-6 lead.

Maryland travels to Chapel Hill, N.C., to take on North Carolina in their ACC opener on Friday. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m.

No. 6 Maryland Wrestling Ready For Northeast Duals
Terps have three difficult dual meets Saturday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - After defeating then-No. 4 Cornell and taking second place at the Body Bar Invitational last weekend, the sixth-ranked University of Maryland wrestling team travels to Ithaca, N.Y., Saturday for three tough dual meets as part of the Journeymen/Asics Northeast Duals.

The Terps (3-0) will face a number of difficult tests, going head-to-head with Northern Colorado, No. 10 Central Michigan and No. 12 Lehigh. Maryland's three opponents have a combined 12 wrestlers ranked in the Intermat Top 20.

"The guys understand that we need to remain focused and build off the momentum from last week and I've been very pleased with their preparation," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "We're trying to get better every day to prepare ourselves for March and this weekend is another important step."

Maryland has close ties to both Lehigh and Central Michigan. During his time at Lehigh, McCoy shared the sidelines with former Maryland head coach Pat Santoro, who was also on the staff at Penn State when McCoy was a wrestler. Santoro left Maryland following the 2007 season to take the head coaching position at Lehigh.

Maryland assistant coach Brandon Sinnott graduated from Central Michigan in 2008 as a two-time All-American and the only wrestler in school history to win three individual Mid-American Conference titles. He served as a graduate assistant for the Chippewas in 2008-09, prior to accepting his current position with the Terps.

Northern Colorado will be competing in its first dual meet of the season when it meets Maryland Saturday. The Bears competed in the Cowboy Open in Laramie, Wyo., on Nov. 14 and hosted the Northern Colorado Open on Nov. 22, though no team scores were kept at the events.

Central Michigan enters Saturday's match 1-0 in dual action, having also competed in the Eastern Michigan Open and Michigan State open on Nov. 7 and Nov. 15, respectively. Seven of the Chippewas 10 probable starters are ranked in the top 20, including Mike Miller, who is No. 1 in the nation at 174 pounds.

Lehigh, meanwhile, holds a 4-1 record with two wins over ranked opponents. The Mountain Hawks have wins over No. 15 Penn State and No. 24 Michigan, with their lone loss coming at the hands of No. 5 Ohio State.

The Terps are led by four wrestlers ranked in the top 10 of their weight divisions. Two-time All-American and third-ranked Hudson Taylor (197 pounds) was named ACC Wrestler of the Week on Tuesday after going 6-0 over the weekend, including two victories over then-No. 5 Cam Simaz of Cornell. With 66 career pins, he is just three shy of tying the school record of 69 set by Jake Stork. Mike Letts is ranked No. 4 at 174 pounds while Steven Bell (133) and Alex Krom (141) are both ranked No. 7. Bell is a perfect 7-0 on the season.

Action gets underway at 9:15 a.m. as Maryland takes on Northern Colorado at Hudson Valley Community College. The Terps face Central Michigan at 1:15 p.m. and Lehigh at 3:15 p.m.

Maryland's Bell, Krom Compete in All-star Classic
Krom takes 8-0 major decision

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - For the first time in school history, the University of Maryland wrestling team sent two wrestlers to the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic, one of the most prestigious events in the sport.

A year after <http://www.umterps.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/taylor_hudson00.html>Hudson Taylor became the first Terp to participate in the event since 1969, Steven Bell and Alex Krom competed in this year's classic, which featured exhibition matches between top wrestlers from across the country.

Bell, ranked No. 8 in the latest Intermat poll at 133 pounds, had the tough task of taking on No. 4 Daniel Dennis of Iowa. Just two days after taking a 4-3 decision over No. 6 Mike Grey of Cornell in Ithaca, N.Y., Bell battled Dennis in a back-and-forth match that came down to the final seconds. With the match knotted at seven, Bell earned a point for an escape and took an 8-7 lead. But with just 25 seconds remaining in the match, Dennis got a takedown, earning a 9-8 decision over Bell.

Krom, who is ranked No. 4 at 141 pounds, was scheduled to face No. 2 Nick Gallick of Iowa. Gallick, however, was unable to attend, and Adin Duenas of host Cal State Fullerton subbed in. Krom took an 8-0 major decision over Duenas.

The matches are considered exhibitions and do not count towards the wrestlers records.

Maryland is back in action on Saturday, Nov. 28, at the Northeast Duals in Troy, N.Y. The Terps will face No. 11 Central Michigan, No. 16 Lehigh and Northern Colorado in dual meets.
No. 10 Maryland Wrestling Takes Second at Body Bar Invitational
Asper, Taylor win individual titles

ITHACA, N.Y. - Josh Asper and No. 3 Hudson Taylor won individual titles as the No. 10 University of Maryland wrestling team tied for second place at the Body Bar Invitational in Ithaca, N.Y., on Saturday.

Asper went 4-0 to claim the championship at 165 pounds. He opened with a 16-1 technical fall over Sli Bostelman of Kent State, followed that with a 14-3 major decision in his second match and then took 4-1 and 4-2 decisions to win the title.

Taylor, who had a crucial pinfall in the win over No. 4 Cornell on Friday, continued his dominance on the mat Saturday. Taylor won his first four matches by pinfall to cruise into the finals for a rematch against No. 5 Cam Simaz of Cornell. Although he didn't get the pin this time, Taylor dispatched Simaz with a 7-2 decision for the title. With five pins this weekend, Taylor now has 66 in his career. The school record is 69 by Jake Stork (1999-2003).

"It was a good weekend, obviously there are errors we can fix but it's great to come out of here with a couple championships and a dual meet win," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "I'm looking forward to the matches tomorrow and to getting back to work this week in preparation for the Northeast Duals."

Mike Letts (174) and Patrick Gilmore (HWT) both finished second in their divisions. Gilmore avenged an earlier loss to Kyle Frey of Drexel, taking a 7-4 decision to reach the finals.

Maryland Wrestling Signs Three Recruits
Terps add wrestlers at 133, 141 and heavyweight

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland wrestling head coach Kerry McCoy announced today the signing of three recruits for the 2010-11 season.

Frank Goodwin of Arundel high school in Maryland, Mark Hartenstine of Easton high school in Pennsylvania, and Spencer Myers of Selinsgrove high school in Pennsylvania have all officially pledged to becoming Terrapins.

The Terps got much needed help at 133 and 141 pounds, as senior All-Americans Steven Bell (133) and Alex Krom (141) are in their final year of eligibility.

Goodwin is ranked No. 5 by Intermat in the 130-pound high school division, and is expected to wrestle at 133 for Maryland. He finished second this year in folkstyle at National Preps, third in Greco-Roman at the Fargo Junior Nationals, and sixth in freestyle, also at the Fargo Junior Nationals.

Harternstine, the No. 12 ranked wrestler in the 140-pound high school division, is expected to wrestle at 141 for the Terps. He has won four championships while in high school, all while wrestling folkstyle. Hartenstine's titles came in 2008 at Manhiem, the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) Open Nationals, and the NHSCA Sophomore Nationals. He also won a Reno TOC title in 2007.

Myers comes in at No. 3 in the 215-pound division and will wrestle at heavyweight for the Terps. He finished second at the 2009 NHSCA Junior Nationals and second at the Pennsylvania state tournament. Myers has won 93 percent of his matches over the past two seasons, going 42-2 as a junior in 2008-09 and 38-4 as a sophomore in 2007-08.
Maryland Open Season with Wins Against Drexel, York

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The 10th-ranked University of Maryland wrestling team opened the 2009-10 season in dominant fashion, winning a pair of duals against Drexel and York in a tri-meet Saturday at Comcast Pavilion.

The Terrapins (2-0) opened the day with a 35-6 victory against Drexel (1-1) and returned shortly after with a 57-0 shutout of York (0-2) that lasted less than 45 minutes and featured eight pins.

"I was happy. We won 18 of 20 matches and got bonus points in a lot of matches," Maryland head coach Kerry McCoy said. "It was a great performance in front of our home crowd. All of our guys got a chance to compete and they competed well."

Maryland opened its match with Drexel with three straight major decisions to open an early 12-0 lead. James Knox won 9-1 at 125 pounds, No. 8 Steven Bell took over late to defeat Steve Mytych, 12-3, at 133 pounds and No. 4 Alex Krom also used a late flurry to knock off Matt Dugan at 141 pounds, 13-5.

Drexel broke through at 149 pounds with a Brett McCurdy decision over Jon Kohler, 4-1, but Maryland re-gained control and cruised to victory from there.

Kyle John and Joseph Booth engaged in the closest and arguably most-entertaining match of the entire day at 157 pounds. John trailed 8-4 heading into the third period and was behind 8-6 with less than a minute remaining. However, John eventually got Booth on the ground to tie the score late and he was able to ride Booth out and earn the riding-time bonus for a thrilling, 9-8 victory.

Josh Asper then took an 18-5 major decision at 165 and Drexel forfeited at 174, putting Maryland on top, 25-3. Corey Peltier followed with an 11-0 major decision at 184 and No. 3 Hudson Taylor had little trouble at 197, pinning Jack Callender in 1 minute, 29 seconds.

The Dragons salvaged the final matchup at heavyweight, as Kyle Frey bested Patrick Gilmore, 7-5, in the first sudden victory period.

Maryland had absolutely no trouble in the final match of the day against York. Maryland won by fall or technical fall in nine of 10 matches, as only one went the regulation seven minutes. Only three matches needed a second period to be decided.

Knox pinned Aaron Repman 52 seconds into the second period to begin the dual and Bell followed suit with a fall in 1:17 against Alex Paladino to give Maryland a 12-0 advantage.

Krom was superior at 141 pounds, earning a 19-4 technical fall with 23 seconds remaining in the first period. Kohler pinned Ryan Catton in 2:09 at 149 and John needed only 58 seconds to pin Alan Dyer at 157.

Asper won a 17-5 major decision against Matt Heisey at 165 pounds in the only match that wasn't decided by fall or technical fall.

After winning by forfeit against Drexel, No. 5 Mike Letts took the mat to wrestle in a dual meet for the first time since the 2007-08 season. Letts was stellar in his return, pinning Paul Richards in 1:19.

The Terps capped the day with three more pins. Peltier pinned Alex Martocello in 6:49, Taylor took out George Saliba in a swift 39 seconds and Gilmore sealed the shutout against Thomas Fitzpatrick, earning a win by fall in 2:01.

Drexel defeated York, 37-9, in the first match of the day.

Maryland has a week off before a highly-anticipated matched Friday, Nov. 20 at Cornell.

Four Maryland Terps Take Home Titles at Buffalo Open

Seven reach finals in Maryland's season opener

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland wrestling team opened the 2009-10 season Sunday at the Buffalo Open, with four Terps taking home individual titles.

While no team scores were kept, seven Terps reached the finals of their respective weight divisions, with James Knox (125), No. 4 Steven Bell (133), Kyle John (157) and No. 4 Mike Letts (174) winning titles.

Maryland Wrestling Update-Blog update, Academic Recognition. NCAA Tickets, Facebook, Media Attention and Upcoming events

I am sure I am not alone when I say the last few weeks have flown by. We just finished our last week of preseason training and will begin official practice Monday. It's been awesome so far and I can't wait to get the next phase going. To get an inside look at the last few weeks, checkout terpswrestling.com/blog. There are a few new posts that I think you will enjoy.

Academic Recognition
Every year the Athletic Department recognizes all student athletes that earned GPA of 3.0 or higher for the previous semester. This year's recognition was last weekend at halftime of the football game. Over 200 student athletes were recognized including 18 wrestlers. Events like this show that it's not just about athletics here at Maryland. I was very proud of our athletes, especially our wrestlers.

NCAA Tickets
Because of our 10th place NCAA finish last year, we are in a position to get great seats this year's NCAA Championship in Omaha. We expect to have a huge group of supporters and want to make sure everyone has a good seat. If you are planning on traveling to the Omaha, and need tickets please let me know. It will be great to have a ton of Terp family and friends up close to watch the team compete for a team title and individual National championships.

Facebook
The Official University of Maryland Facebook page is up and running. This is another tool that we will be using to promote our program and events through the season. If you are on Facebook and want to find the page, search "official maryland wrestling" and it should come up. This page is linked to our Twitter page, so if you do not follow us on Twitter, you can still keep up with the Terps on Facebook.

Media Attention
Inside PressBox, a weekly show covering Baltimore-area sports, will feature the University of Maryland wrestling program this Sunday at 11:30 a.m. on ABC in Baltimore. The show will include interviews with 2x All-American Hudson Taylor and I. Fans outside the viewing area will be able to view the program at www.pressboxonline.com starting Monday. Upcoming events
October 17th weekend is Homecoming and we will have a "Meet the Team" Tailgate. We are going to work out at 10am and start the tailgate at noon. We will have a tent setup in the PP* parking lot on the south side of The Comcast Center. We encourage you to stop by to meet the coaches and team. If you are in the area Friday afternoon or early Saturday, please stop by and watch the workout. Friday's practice is at 3.30p.

On October 24th we will hold our Red and Black wrestle offs. This is the event were the top two guys at each weight will battle for the starting spot. It will be the first chance for the guys to compete in front of a live crowd and it will be the first chance for our fans to see the guys in action. This will also be a reunion for all of Maryland's individual conference champions, who will be recognized before the match. After the match, we will have a social to recognize the 2009 ACC Championship team and present championship rings to the wrestlers, coaches and support staff. As we get closer, I will send more details about this event.

As you can see we have a lot going on, and a lot ahead of us. If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact me. Take care, keep in touch and thank you for your continued support.

Coaches Beckerman and Powell are preparing to travel to Fargo, ND for the Cadet and Junior Nationals next week. Our guys' level of commitment and energy is very high this summer. A lot of the returning wrestlers are in the area working, taking classes and training. As well, we have a few of our incoming freshmen in the area getting ready for the next step in their academic and athletic lives which shows their level of commitment to the next step in their academic and wrestling careers.

We are in the final stages of planning our golf outing. The date is set for Friday, August 28. The event will be held at the University of Maryland Golf Course. We anticipate mailing info this week. If you are not on our mailing list and would like information on our outing, please send me your address or you can go to terpswretling.com and get more info.

When you visit terpswrestling.com you will see some new enhancements to the site. I am excited to announce that we have started two blogs for this coming season. This year's schedule is very competitive and will test us throughout the year. We have a lot of variety in our schedule. There is a good mix of teams we have seen before and teams we have not. We will compete with teams from almost every conference, which will be very good for our guys because they will be exposed to many different styles. We have the potential to do some great things this coming season and this schedule will force us to be sharp and focused throughout the entire season.

Among some of the Terps' notable opponents are Cornell, Lehigh, Central Michigan, Penn, Purdue, Navy and American. We will also compete in the Body Bar Invitational, Northeast Duals, Penn State Open, Midlands Championships and NWCA National Duals. Its going to be a great year.

Click below to see the full schedule and visit umterps.com for the full release and to check out the new intro on our wrestling page.

Thanks for the support.

2009-10 Schedule

The unofficial start to the season is October 24 with the annual Red and Black Wrestle-Offs exhibition in Comcast Pavilion. The Terps officially get going November 7 with a home tri-meet against Drexel and York College. A challenging trip to upstate New York beckons two weeks after the opening tri-meet in College Park, as the Terps will face national power Cornell on the road on a Friday evening in Ithaca before coming back Saturday to compete in the Body Bar Invitational.

Things get no easier the following weekend with another trip to New York, this time to Troy, N.Y., for a trio of exciting match ups in the Northeast Duals. Maryland's three opponents include stalwarts Lehigh, Central Michigan and Northern Colorado.

Atlantic Coast Conference competition begins December 4 at North Carolina. The Penn State Open is that same weekend then we return home to Comcast Pavilion December 11 for a non-conference match up with the University of Pennsylvania.

After a two-week holiday break, the Terps travel to Evanston, Ill., for the second straight year to compete in the Midlands Championships, one of the most prestigious college wrestling tournaments, at Northwestern University.
A return trip to the Midwest is scheduled for the following week, where Maryland will compete in the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The Terps will be in Ashland, Ohio, the following weekend for the Wendy's Duals, where Maryland will face Purdue, Kent State and Ashland.
Following its three-week trip to the Midwest, Maryland returns to the area for the final month to complete dual competition.

The annual highly-anticipated rivalry match up between Maryland and Navy is set for January 22 in Annapolis. An ACC doubleheader is scheduled the next day at Comcast Pavilion. Maryland will face NC State at noon and Duke at 5 p.m.

George Mason hosts the Terps January 29 before the Terps return home to face Virginia Tech, last year's regular-season ACC champion, the following weekend in College Park.

Another local rival is on tap February 12 as American University visits College Park. Two days after the American tilt, Hofstra is in town for a challenging non-conference clash on Valentine's Day.

The regular season ends February 20 with a short trip south to Charlottesville, Va., to close the ACC season at Virginia.

Following the trip to Virginia, the Terps will have two weeks off before coming right back to Charlottesville for the ACC Championship, where Maryland will look to win its third straight conference title.
Maryland's NCAA qualifiers will travel to Omaha, Neb., March 18-20, as the Terps will look to build on last year's school record-tying 10th place national finish.

Joining Taylor on the ACC team are teammates Danny Bichner (Letters & Sciences), Mike Hromada (Letters & Sciences), Patrick Klenkel (Government), James Knox (Kinesiology) and Dex Lederer (Letters & Sciences).
