Ohio Wrestling Recognizes Historic Season with Awards Banquet
Germane Lindsey earns three team awards, including Most Valuable Wrestler
ATHENS, Ohio- Ohio Wrestling honored its historic 2009-10 campaign with a banquet in Ohio University's Baker Center on Sunday. Coaches and student-athletes alike took to the podium to make speeches about the season, a year in which the team went 12-5 (3-2 Mid-American Conference), finished third place as a team at the MAC Tournament and sent five wrestlers to the 2010 NCAA Championships in Omaha.
"I really appreciate all of you being here today," said head coach Joel Greenlee to the student-athletes, parents and support staff on hand. "We're all really glad that you came inside for this banquet on one of the nicest days we've had in the last two weeks," he joked. Greenlee proceeded to give a recap of the successful season, describing in detail all of the hard work and dedication that it took for his wrestlers to achieve what they did in 2009-10.
Andy Daniels-one of Ohio Wrestling's all-time legends-was in attendance at the banquet on Sunday. Daniels is one of Ohio Wrestling's four national champions, earning the honors in 1978.
Statistical awards were given out early in the afternoon, in categories such as most pins (Kyle Sanders), Most wins (Germane Lindsey) and best individual grade-point average (Kyle Lang's 4.0). These later gave way to the annual five team awards, a collection of honors for which the entire team votes on a worthy honoree.
The Redshirt of the Year award goes to a Bobcat wrestler who has been judged to have made the most out of his redshirt season. This award was given to freshman Jeremy Johnson (Brecksville, Ohio). Johnson had a fantastic campaign competing unattached, wrestling with much intensity and passion. The heavyweight was a highly-touted recruit a year ago, being named one of Sports Illustrated's "Faces in the Crowd" when he was in high school.
The next team award of the day was the Hardest Worker award. This honor is bestowed upon the student-athlete that the team deems to exhibit dedication above and beyond what was required. This wrestler is at every practice, puts in time on his own and puts forth maximum effort every single day. Lindsey (Cincinnati, Ohio) won this award on Sunday. The junior 141-pounder is often the first one in the wrestling room and earned the award after both of the two prior seasons, making this his third year in a row to have claimed the honor.
Jacob Ison (Batavia, Ohio) was given the Most Courageous award for the 2009-10 season. The redshirt senior had an incredible final year as a Bobcat, posting a 25-8 record en route to a third-place finish at the MAC Championships and a berth to the NCAA Championships. Ison has compiled a 79-32 record throughout his decorated career. The award was accepted by his father on Sunday, as Jacob is currently in Colorado Springs, Colorado to train for the Olympic Wrestling Trials. He was able to make his senior speech at the banquet via Skype.
The coaching staff had nothing but praise for the winner of this year's Most Improved Award, senior Seth Morton. Morton (Canal Winchester, Ohio) compiled a 24-10 mark in his senior season en route to a second-place finish at the MAC Championships and a berth at the NCAA Championships. The coaches detailed the fight that he showed throughout his career, as he got off to a bit of a rocky start but was really able to right the ship during his time as a Bobcat, ending with a 55-49 record while donning the Green and White. The fact that he was named an Academic All-American at the end of his senior year was heavily praised by the coaches.
The final award of the day was the Most Valuable Wrestler, an honor which goes to a member of the team that has shown by athletic and academic excellence. Lindsey won this award as well, making it the second time in his career he has earned such an honor. Lindsey became the program's 18th All-American this season, placing sixth at 141 pounds in Omaha.
After commending his student-athletes for a great season, Greenlee reminded them that much work remains to be done. "How can we make next year even better than this year?" was the question he asked his team at the end of the afternoon.
Ohio's Morton Named to Division One All-Academic Team
Bobcat standout one of 74 student-athletes recognized by National Wrestling Coaches Association
ATHENS, Ohio- Ohio Wrestling's Seth Morton has been named to the 2010 Division One All-Academic Team, the National Wrestling Coaches Association announced Wednesday. The Bobcat standout is joined by 73 other student-athletes from a total of 45 schools (Ohio included).
To qualify for the All-Academic team, a wrestler must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and either be a 2010 NCAA qualifier or have won 60 percent of his total schedule in addition to having competed in at least 60 percent of said schedule. The other way to qualify for the All-Academic team is to have a 3.0 GPA and earn NCAA All-American status.
Of the 45 schools represented on this year's team, Edinboro, Nebraska and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga led the way with four wrestlers earning accolades. American, Ohio State, Purdue and Utah Valley each contributed three to the team.
Ohio was the second-highest represented school in the Mid-American Conference on this year's team. Buffalo earned two spots on the squad as John-Martin Cannon and Kevin Smith were selected.
Morton (Canal Winchester, Ohio) excelled both in the classroom and on the mat in 2009-10. He earned a spot on the Academic All-MAC team for the third consecutive year and was also an All-MAC Honorable Mention thanks to his second place finish (149 pounds) at the conference championships. The senior finished his last year in the Green and White by going 24-10 en route to making an appearance at the 2010 NCAA Championships, where he finished with a 1-2 record. Morton compiled a 12-2 dual meet during his senior season, putting together an impressive 8-0 record in bonus point matches. He began the season on an absolute tear, winning 13 of his first 14 bouts and finished his career as a Bobcat with a 55-49 record. Morton is a Physical Therapy major that has currently compiled a GPA of 3.298.
The Bobcats finished the 2009-10 season with a 12-5 mark in dual meet competition and a third place finish at the MAC Championships. Erik Schuth (Spencerport, NY) became the 101st MAC Champion in program history, taking first at 197 pounds while Germane Lindsey (Cincinnati, Ohio) became the 18th Bobcat to earn All-American honors.
Ohio Wrestling Adds Two
Bobcats to welcome Brad Squire and Jordon Nolan, two wrestlers who have combined for five state titles
ATHENS, Ohio- Just off the heels of a tremendous 2009-10 campaign that saw five Bobcat wrestlers compete at the NCAA Tournament and 141-pounder Germane Lindsey become the program's 18th All-American, Ohio Wrestling has announced the addition of wrestlers Brad Squire and Jordon Nolan for 2010-11. The two wrestlers have combined for five state titles throughout their careers and will join Ohio's two additions from November-Michael Duckworth and Beau Wenger-in next year's freshman class.
Squire is currently ranked as the No. 4 145-pounder in the nation by Wrestling USA Magazine. He is a four-time Ohio High School Athletic Association place-winner, with two of those honors being state titles. He won the OHSAA state title during his freshman (2007) and senior (2010) seasons, while also earning second (2008) and sixth (2009). A native of Wadsworth High School in Wadsworth, Ohio, Squire projects at 149 pounds.
Nolan, a native or Parkersburg High School in Vienna, West Virginia, also had a very impressive high school career. He was listed as an honorable mention at 145 pounds by Wrestling USA Magazine. Nolan is a three-time West Virginia state champion, taking top honors at the annual championships during his freshman (2007), sophomore (2008) and senior (2010) campaigns. He earned All-American status from the National High School Coaches Association and was also the 2010 Robert Dutton Award winner, an honor that goes to the top prep wrestler in the state of West Virginia. The Bobcat-to-be projects at 149/157 pounds.
The Bobcats finished the 2009-10 season with a 12-5 mark in dual meet competition and a third place finish at the Mid-American Conference Championships. Erik Schuth became the 101st MAC Champion in program history, taking first at 197 pounds while the aforementioned Lindsey became the 18th Bobcat to earn All-American honors.
Ohio Wrestling Complete Weekend at NCAA Championships
Lindsey takes sixth at 141 pounds to earn best finish by an Ohio wrestler in five years
OMAHA, Neb.- Ohio Wrestling finished its weekend of competition at the 2010 NCAA Championships on Saturday, finishing tied for 35th place as a team. The Bobcat wrestlers finished with a record of 9-11 in their 20 total bouts throughout the three days of competition. Germane Lindsey headlined the impressive Ohio performances, finishing sixth place overall at 141 pounds to earn the Green and White's 24th All-American honors in program history.
"Ohio University has a great history in wrestling and every guy in our room is trying to add to it," said head coach Joel Greenlee. "We're very proud of Germane. Sometimes this tournament isn't necessarily about being the most talented guy or the best technician or anything like that…rather sometimes it just comes down to being a tough guy. I thought that's how he wrestled all week. He wrestled hard for seven minutes every match and good things happened for him."
Lindsey joins the ranks of such Bobcat greats as Dave Unik (1968), Kurt Blank (1974) and Rob Johnson (1987), who all finished sixth place at the NCAA Tournament. Ohio Wrestling has also produced four national champions, as Kermit Blosser (1932), Harry Houska (1964), Andy Daniels (1978) and Dwight Gardner (1998) all earned top honors in their respective weight classes once during their legendary careers.
"(This weekend) shows that we are headed in the right direction," said Greenlee. "It shows this group of guys that they are doing the right things when there is a guy that has achieved what everyone else wants to achieve. It shows that if you do the right things, you can get it done."
The junior from Cincinnati, Ohio, wrestled in two bouts on Saturday morning to wrap up his and Ohio's portion of the tournament. Lindsey ran into the eventual third-place finisher, No. 4 Reece Humphrey of Ohio State in the first of the day's bouts. Humphrey jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead at the end of the first period but Lindsey was able to answer back and earn a few points of his own in the second. Holding a 6-3 lead at the beginning of the third and final period, Humphrey went on a tear, scoring nine points en route to taking a 15-4 major decision.
In his second and final bout of the day, Lindsey lost a 3-2 decision to No. 10 Tyler Nauman of Pittsburgh. Nauman took a 3-1 lead into the third period, a frame in which Lindsey scored an escape to narrow the gap to 3-2. The 141-pounder from Pittsburgh was able to hold him off the rest of the way, however, to take the bout and fifth place.
As a reminder of what can be the result of years of hard work and dedication, Ohio Wrestling has emblazoned on a wall in its practice room the names of every Bobcat who has achieved All-American status or won a Mid-American Conference championship.
"It is definitely going to feel good to add his name to the wall," added Greenlee.
See below for results from day three:
Ohio Wrestling Third Day Results

Ohio Wrestling Adds Two, Set to Send Five to NCAA Championships
Lindsey and Ison earn at-large bids Wednesday night
ATHENS, Ohio- Ohio Wrestling is set to send five student-athletes to the upcoming 2010 NCAA Championships in Omaha, Nebraska. Germane Lindsey and Jacob Ison were awarded at-large bids on Wednesday night and are set to join teammates Seth Morton, Nick Purdue and Erik Schuth at the tournament.
Morton (Canal Winchester, Ohio), Purdue (Genoa, Ohio) and Schuth (Spencerport, N.Y.) earned automatic bids due to their performances at the Mid-American Conference Tournament last weekend. Morton and Purdue took second at 149 and 184 pounds, respectively, while Schuth became Ohio's 101st individual MAC champion, winning the 197-pound bracket.
A senior, Morton is set to square off against the No. 1 seed Lance Palmer of Ohio State. Palmer brings a record of 27-2 to the 2010 Championships.
Purdue, a redshirt sophomore, will be matched up against Thomas Spellman of Virginia Tech at 184 pounds. Spellman is 28-11 this season.
Schuth-the proud owner of a 24-5 season record that includes a 6-0 mark in matches decided by pin-will take on No. 12 seed Brent Haynes of Missouri. Haynes, only a redshirt freshman, brings a 25-13 record to the tournament.
Both Lindsey and Ison have had very good seasons for Ohio, as Lindsey is currently 26-6 and Ison owns a 22-6 record. Lindsey is 9-0 in bonus-point bouts this season, as he is 3-0 in matches decided by pin and a perfect 6-0 in those decided by major decision. Ison's numbers are equally impressive, as he is 8-2 in bouts decided by pin and 2-2 in those determined by major decision. Each of these two wrestlers that were "on the bubble", so to speak, finished third in their respective weight classes at the MAC Tournament.
Lindsey will face off against Trevor Melde of Rutgers in the first round, a sophomore that boasts a 25-10 record. Teammate and fellow at-large selection Ison will take on Nathan Graham, a 174-pounder from Bloomsburg University that 27-9 this season.
The Championships are set to take place from March 18-20 in Omaha, Nebraska.
Schuth Wins Championship, Ohio Finish Third
Morton, Purdue and Schuth all qualify for NCAA Tournament
MT. PLEASANT, Mich.- Erik Schuth became Ohio's 101st Mid-American Conference Champion wrestler on Sunday, winning the 197 pound bracket at the MAC Championships. The junior headlines an impressive group of three wrestlers that qualified for the 2010 NCAA Championships, as teammates Seth Morton and Nick Purdue will be joining him in Omaha, Nebraska on March 18-20. Germane Lindsey and Jacob Ison also have a shot at being selected to go to the Championships when the final picks are made on Tuesday. The Bobcats finished third overall in the tournament, scoring 62 team points.
"We had a great day today," said head coach Joel Greenlee. "We beat a guy in the finals of 197 who had beaten us before; Tucker beat Stella of Buffalo…we won the head-to-head matches when we had to today."
The Bobcats ended the tournament with seven wrestlers finishing in the top four of their respective weight divisions. Schuth (Spencerport, N.Y.) took first at 197; Morton (Canal Winchester, Ohio) and Purdue (Genoa, Ohio) earned second at 149 and 184 pounds, respectively and Gabe Ramos (125), Germane Lindsey (141), Clay Tucker (157) and Jacob Ison (174) all earned third place.
With his first-place finish at 197 pounds, Schuth has been named to the All-MAC First Team. Morton and Purdue earned All-MAC Honorable Mention with their runner-up performances.
Ramos (Hopatcong, N.J.) had a solid final day on Sunday, winning his only bout. He earned an overtime pin over Kent State's Troy Opfer, taking the 125-pounder down in 8:21. The redshirt freshman finished the year with a final record of 13-7, winning eight of his last 12 contests.
Germane Lindsey took a 7-2 decision over Kent State's Chase Skonieczny in his final bout of the season. The junior finished with an impressive 26-6 record at season's end on his path to third place in the MAC.
Morton followed up his huge win over on Central Michigan's No. 13 Tony D'Alie on Saturday with an exciting 3-2 decision loss to Buffalo's No. 19 Desi Green in the final. The senior's season is not over yet, as he will compete in the 2010 NCAA Championships.
Fellow senior Tucker went 1-0 on the final day of the tournament, winning a 6-4 decision over Buffalo's Andrew Stella to finish third at 157 pounds. The senior captain finishes his career with an impressive 71-66 career record, a mark that includes his 25-15 ledger this season.
After losing his first bout of the tournament, Ison (Batavia, Ohio) came back in a big way. He took a 12-3 major decision over Eastern Michigan's Justin Brandel to conclude Saturday's action before pinning Buffalo's Brian Sheehan in just 67 seconds to earn third place. The senior ends a stellar career wearing the Green and White, finishing with a lifetime record of 76-30 (22-6 this season).
Purdue faced off against Kent State's No. 5 Dustin Kilgore in the final match of the 184 pound bracket. Kilgore proved to be too much in the end, taking a 13-5 major decision over Purdue. Nonetheless, Purdue's big Saturday win over Central Michigan's No. 14 Mike Miller punched his ticket to the NCAA Championships.
"Kilgore is pretty tough," added Grenlee. "Purdue beat (Central Michigan's) Mike Miller, a national finalist last year, to get into the final match. It was a great tournament for him."
Schuth won the title by shutting out Buffalo's Jimmy Hammel, 2-0. The junior did not allow a point to be scored against him throughout the tournament, taking two decisions by a combined score of 3-0.
"He's had a great year," said Greenlee. "For him I think the move up (in weight class) was great from the standpoint of being durable. He didn't have to concentrate on cutting weight this year, rather he could concentrate on wrestling and getting better. He pulled through when he had to."
Host Central Michigan took the overall team title, earning 94 points. Kent State came in second with 73, just 11 ahead of Ohio. Buffalo (60.5), Northern Illinois (24.5) and Eastern Michigan (18) rounded out the rest of the conference.

"Schuth looked good today," added Greenlee. "He's tough on top. He got an early takedown and just took the bout from there."
Ohio will have a few days away from competition before it heads back up to Mount Pleasant, Michigan, for the MAC Championships on March 6 and 7.
"I feel pretty good (about the upcoming Championships)", said Greenlee. "We accomplished what we needed to in order to finish third in the regular season, and now we need to perform at the Championships to see if we can send five or six guys to Nationals."

Ohio Bobcats Handle West Virginia Mountaineers
Pins pave the way for a smooth victory at Ohio University's Eastern Campus
ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio- Ohio Wrestling (11-4, 2-1 Mid-American Conference) got back to its winning ways in St. Clairsville on Sunday, defeating the West Virginia Mountaineers by a final score of 27-15. The Bobcats came out ready and wrestled hard, taking three of their victories by way of pin. Gabe Ramos, Germane Lindsey, Seth Morton, Clay Tucker, Jacob Ison and Nick Purdue all earned wins against the Mountaineers.
"We wrestled pretty well," said head coach Joel Greenlee. "I was a little worried about it from the standpoint of having a big match on Friday and losing a heart-breaker (to Kent State) and not knowing how we'd bounce back. We bounced back well."
The day began with a wrestling clinic hosted by Bobby Douglas. Douglas had an impressive wrestling career, winning five national championships and two U.S. Olympic Trials Titles. He captained the United States Freestyle Wrestling Team at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City and was named the Nation's Outstanding Wrestler in 1970. He is also a member of the Wrestling Hall of Fame.
The dual meet began with the 125 pound wrestlers squaring off. Mountaineer Shane Young started quickly out of the gate, earning a takedown in the first minute of the bout to go up 2-0. Ramos (Hopatcong, N.J.) came up with a nice escape the center of the mat and then a takedown in the final minute of the first round to take a 3-2 lead. Young fought back, opening up the second period with a takedown of his own to retake the lead. Ramos was then able to pull off back-to-back escapes, finding himself in the third period with a 5-4 lead.
Young was not done, however, and came back with a big takedown. Ramos promptly followed it up with another escape, and the bout was tied at six with seven seconds left when the redshirt freshman came back with the winning takedown. Young had over a minute of riding time to get one more point, but Ramos took the bout by a final score of 8-7 to put Ohio up 3-0.
West Virginia's No. 18 Colin Johnston came through in a big way in the day's next bout, pinning Tim Silvers (Eaton, Ohio) in 2:38 to give the Mountaineers a 6-3 lead.
Lindsey (Cincinnati, Ohio) started off his bout well, taking a 4-1 lead at the end of the first period. He racked up multiple takedowns in the second period, pushing the score to 14-6 before he eventually pinned Ryan Romano in 5:29, earning a huge six points for the Bobcats.
The 149 pound bout was a very strategic one, as Morton (Canal Winchester, Ohio) and opponent Mike Rowe tried to feel out each other's strengths and weaknesses. The first score came in the second period when Morton achieved an escape, which he immediately followed with a takedown. Rowe was able to make it close with back-to-back reversals, but Morton added another takedown to take the bout by a final score of 5-2.
In a homecoming of sorts for Tucker (Martins Ferry, Ohio) the redshirt senior found himself in a close battle with Mountaineer Kyle Eason. Tucker took an early 2-0 advantage with a first period takedown, but Eason came back in a big way with a three-point near-fall. Tucker was able to reverse it, however, taking a 4-3 lead into the final period. He was able to hold on to that lead in a furious third period, taking the win by decision.
Donnie Jones of West Virginia (2-9, 2-2 Eastern Wrestling League) came out strong in the first period of the 165 pound bout, earning an early takedown. He pushed his advantage out further to 5-0 before Kevin Christensen (Fairborn, Ohio) escaped his hold for Ohio's first point in the bout. Jones kept up the pressure and earned a 10-3 victory by decision.
The 174 pound bout got off to a furious start as Ison (Batavia, Ohio) earned a takedown in the first 30 seconds. He pushed the advantage to 11-1 before pinning Matt Weston in just 97 seconds, giving the Bobcats a 21-9 lead. The pin was Ison's seventh of the season, a mark that leads all Bobcat wrestlers in 2009-10.
"Ison looked great, I thought," added Greenlee. "He went out there and really put it on his guy."
Purdue (Genoa, Ohio) followed Ison's lead by starting fast, leaping out to a 9-2 lead. He kept up the pressure on West Virginia's Brandon Boyer, finally pinning the Mountaineer with six seconds remaining in the bout.
Schuth (Spencerport, N.Y.) had an impressive bout for the Bobcats at 197 pounds, racking up takedown after takedown to grab an early lead. WVU's Kyle Rooney stormed back in the second period, narrowing the score to 6-5 in favor of Schuth. Rooney came away with a big takedown in the final seconds of the third period, taking a 7-6 decision.
In the final bout of the day, redshirt freshman Matt Prichard (Dayton, Ohio) wrestled in his first bout of the season. He stymied Brandon Williamson through the first period, taking a 0-0 score into the second. Williamson took the final bout with a 4-0 decision to wrap up the match.
"It was a great event (at Ohio University East)," said Greenlee. "Like I said on Friday, I think that we need to make wrestling important and get our name out there a bit around the state. I thought it was another good crowd today."
The Bobcats will next be in action when they travel to No. 6 Central Michigan on February 19.

Kent State Edge Ohio, 17-16
Bobcats fight valiantly on senior night but fall just short
ATHENS, Ohio- In front of an enthusiastic senior night crowd of over seven hundred Friday night at the Convocation Center, Ohio Wrestling lost a close dual meet to the No. 20 Kent State Golden Flashes. Each team won five of the ten bouts but the visitors were able to escape Athens with a 17-16 win.
Gabe Ramos (Hopatcong, N.J.) started off the meet the right way for the Bobcats (10-4, 2-1 Mid-American Conference), taking a 5-1 decision over Troy Opfer. The victory was Ramos's eighth of the season and his first over Opfer, a wrestler who took a 5-2 decision over him on January 9.
Kent State's nationally-ranked (No. 9) Danny Mitcheff came back in a big way in the 133 pound class, taking a 16-0 technical fall victory over Michael Fennell. Fennell, a redshirt sophomore from Commack, N.Y., fought hard through the first period, only conceding two points. Mitcheff then got aggressive in the second frame, earning an escape, a takedown and two three-point near-falls en route to winning the bout.
With the Golden Flashes (14-3, 3-0 MAC) holding a 5-3 lead, Germane Lindsey (Cincinnati, Ohio) was able to help his squad regain the lead by taking a 13-4 major decision over Kent's 141-pounder. The bout was tied 2-2 at the end of the second period, after which Lindsey went on an 11-2 point run in two minutes to earn four big points for the Green and White. The win was Lindsey's 50th career victory as a Bobcat, his second consecutive major decision and his fifth victory in a row.
"That was huge," said head coach Joel Greenlee. "That was what he had planned. His plan was to get the guy tired and then get on it from there, which is what he did."
Seth Morton (Canal Winchester, Ohio), the first Bobcat senior to take the mat, was able to win a 5-1 decision over Kent's Tommy Sasfy. Morton held a 2-1 lead going into the third and final frame, a period in which he earned a two-point reversal and a bonus point for his 2:58 riding time.
Fellow seniors Clay Tucker (Martins Ferry, Ohio) and Kevin Christensen (Fairborn, Ohio) were not able to achieve victories Friday, as Tucker lost a 2-1 double-overtime decision and Christensen ended up on the wrong side of a 4-0 decision. Redshirt Senior Jacob Ison (Batavia, Ohio) followed up at 174 pounds by taking a 4-2 decision over Keith Witt. Ison gave the Bobcats a 13-11 lead with the victory, which was the 72nd of his impressive career.
The teams split the next two bouts, as Kent State's nationally-ranked (No. 5) Dustin Kilgoure won a 6-3 decision over No. 18 Nick Purdue (Genoa, Ohio) in the 184 class. Junior Erik Schuth (Spencerport, N.Y.) then took a 4-0 shutout decision in the 197 pound class, setting the stage for a winner-take-all heavyweight bout as the Bobcats were on the sunny side of a 16-14 score.
The evening's final bout was a microcosm of the entire dual meet, as it involved the same intensity and excitement that the other nine had provided. Kent State's Joe Tymosuzuk took an early 5-2 lead into the second period after stringing together a takedown, an escape and a two-point near-fall. Andy Hartshorn (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) came back in a big way, earning three of the next five points to push the score to 7-5. Hartshorn added two takedowns in the third period, the second of which tied the score at 10-10 with no time remaining. The only thing separating this final bout from overtime was the 81 seconds of riding time that Kent's heavyweight had accumulated throughout the match. This final point propelled the Flashes to an 11-10 win in the bout and a 17-16 victory in the dual meet.
"We put ourselves in a position to win," said Greenlee. "Every guy worked his tail off but we just didn't do it. It doesn't mean our chances are over. It means we go back, work harder, work a little bit smarter, work at getting better technique-the whole nine yards-and try to get them at the MAC Championships."
The Bobcats will next be in action when they host West Virginia at Ohio University Eastern in St. Clairsville on Sunday. First bout is set for 3 p.m. with a youth wrestling clinic beginning at noon.

Ohio Bobcats Best Buffalo Bulls
Bonus points prove to be the key as Ohio defeats Buffalo, 22-17
BUFFALO, N.Y.- Ohio Wrestling (10-3, 2-0 Mid-American Conference) went on the road and came away with a hard-fought 22-17 victory over the Buffalo Bulls on Saturday. The Bobcats and the Bulls split the victories right down the middle, as each team came away winning five of the ten weight classes. Clay Tucker, Jacob Ison, Nick Purdue, Andy Hartshorn and Germane Lindsey all defeated their opponents in the match.
Bonus points proved to be the deciding factor, as of the five Ohio victories on Saturday, three were bonus point wins (victories that come by way of major decision, pin or technical fall). Only two of Buffalo's victories was a bonus point win.
"That's what we tell our guys before the match," said head coach Joel Greenlee. "We've got to go out there and get big wins."
The day began with Tucker (Martins Ferry, Ohio) taking a 3-2 decision over Buffalo's Andrew Stella. The Bulls countered in the 165-pound class as No. 20 John-Martin Cannon won a 4-2 decision over Ohio's Kevin Christensen (Fairborn, Ohio). At this point the match was tied 3-3.
The next two bouts went quite well for the 'Cats, as Ison (Batavia, Ohio) pinned Pat Brady in 3:43 and No. 18 Purdue (Genoa, Ohio) took a 9-3 decision over Buffalo's Josh Peters. The Green and White held a 12-3 lead at this point in the match.
Jimmy Hamel came up with an upset of No. 12 Schuth (Spencerport, N.Y.) to get the Bulls back on track at 12-6. Hartshorn (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) came back in a big way for the Bobcats in the heavyweight class, pinning his opponent in 3:52 to grab a vital six points.
"He did great," said Greenlee. "That's one of those matches where he knows that he needs to get a big win. The other guy is trying not to give up big points. Hartshorn had to go out there, stay after him, take some chances and it worked out for him."
Buffalo (7-5-1, 0-1 MAC) won three of the day's final four bouts, making this match a nail-biter. At 125 pounds, Dan Bishop won a 17-5 major decision over Bobcat Gabe Ramos (Hopatcong, N.J.). Kevin Smith then took a close 7-5 decision over Quentin Keyes (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) at 133 pounds to pull the Bulls closer.
No. 11 Lindsey (Cincinnati, Ohio) won a very important bout at 141 pounds, taking an 11-3 major decision over Andrew Schutt to put the match out of reach. No. 16 Desi Green won a 24-8 technical fall over Darrin Boing (Northfield Center, Ohio) but at that point the match was out of reach. See below for full results:

Ohio Falls to American
'Cats can't overcome early deficit, lose third dual meet of the season
WASHINGTON, D.C.- Ohio Wrestling (9-3, 1-0 Mid-American Conference) ran into a tough American University squad on Sunday, falling by a final score of 27-18 in the nation's capital. Germane Lindsey (Cincinnati, Ohio), Kevin Christensen, Erik Schuth (Spencerport, N.Y.) and Andy Hartshorn (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) all won their bouts during the dual meet, with Christensen (Fairborn, Ohio) and Schuth taking their victories by pin.
"We just didn't wrestle with the same fire that we've had," said head coach Joel Greenlee. "We gave away penalty points in close matches, which you can't do and expect to win."
The Eagles (4-6, 0-1 EIWA) got off to a fast start Sunday, taking the first two bouts by decision. No. 18 Jasen Borshoff took a 4-1 decision over Gabe Ramos (Hopatcong, N.J.) to give the hosts an early 3-0 lead. This bout was followed by a very close 5-4 decision which saw Thomas Williams victorious over Bobcat Quentin Keyes (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio).
No. 13 Lindsey then won for Ohio at 141 pounds, taking a close 3-2 decision over Jordan Lipp to cut the Eagles' lead in half at 6-3.
American came out very strong in the next two weight classes, as No. 12 Kyle Borshoff and No. 3 Steve Fittery each pinned a Bobcat in the 149 and 157-pound classes. After these two bouts, the Eagles held a commanding 18-3 lead.
Christensen came back in a big way in the 165-pound class, pinning American's Tanner Shaffer in 6:13. The pin was Christensen's second of the season, with the other one coming against conference foe Northern Illinois on January 14.
"He and Schuth wrestled great," said Greenlee. "Both went out there and got falls for us today."
The Eagles did a good job of stopping any potential Bobcat comeback by earning nine points in the next two bouts, as Phillip Barreiro took a 4-2 decision over Steve Wilson (Marion, Ohio) and No. 4 Mike Cannon pinned Brian Driscoll (Avon Lake, Ohio) in 1:46.
No. 13 Schuth and Hartshorn competed valiantly at the end, as Schuth pinned American's 197-pound wrestler in under 90 seconds for his fifth pin-and 20th victory-of the season. Hartshorn wrestled well at heavyweight, taking a 9-4 decision over Eagle Blake Herrin. Full results of Sunday's action below (with rankings courtesy of InterMatWrestle.com):

Ohio Bobcats Complete Weekend Sweep with Win over Wolfpack
Ohio wins 16 of 20 bouts during successful weekend
ATHENS, Ohio- Ohio Wrestling (9-2, 1-0 Mid-American Conference) completed a successful weekend at home Sunday, defeating the visiting North Carolina State Wolfpack by a final score of 33-7. Ohio won eight of the day's ten bouts and 16 of 20 throughout the weekend. Quentin Keyes, Clay Tucker, Nick Purdue and Erik Schuth were big winners for the Bobcats Sunday, taking a total of three major decisions and one pin between the four of them.
"I felt pretty good about it (Sunday's dual meet)," said head coach Joel Greenlee. "They came out and came after us a little bit and we weathered the storm, stayed in there and tried to wear them down and get them tired."
Gabe Ramos (Hopatcong, N.J.) got the match off to a quick start for the Green and White, battling hard against Mike Moreno of the Wolfpack. Ramos earned an early takedown for the only points of the bout, which was cut short due to an injury forfeit by NC State's 125-pounder.
Keyes (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) wrestled well in the next bout, taking a 9-0 major decision over Scott Norris. Keyes' aggressiveness led to a takedown and a three-point near-fall in the first round, a lead from which he never looked back.
Redshirt freshman Josh Speelman (Mansfield, Ohio) saw his first action of the season Sunday, wrestling at 149 pounds. He wrestled hard but was bested by NC State's Bobby Ward in a 13-4 major decision.
Tucker (Martins Ferry, Ohio) bounced back from his loss on Thursday with a dominating 15-3 major decision over the Juan Stimpson of the Wolfpack (4-6, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference). Tucker had a 6-3 lead at the end of the first period and went on a 9-0 point run the rest of the way to win the bout convincingly. He amassed four takedowns and 1:53 in riding time during the bout.
Purdue (Genoa, Ohio) had a great showing in the 184-pound class. He leapt out to an early 6-0 lead before pinning Cedric Moore 92 seconds into the second frame.
"He's been very successful so far this year," said Greenlee. "He goes out there and does the same thing every time and is consistent. That is one of the most important things of being good is that you never beat yourself."
Schuth (Spencerport, N.Y.) emphatically followed Purdue's pin with an impressive victory of his own. The junior won a 15-1 major decision over Christian McClean. The victory was his 19th of the season and he is currently the owner of an undefeated 9-0 mark in dual meets.

Schuth Takes Silver, Helps Propel Ohio to Sixth at Southern Scuffle
Five ‘Cats finish seventh or better in Greensboro
GREENSBORO, N.C.- Ohio Wrestling followed up its fourth-place finish at the Reno Tournament of Champions with an impressive sixth-place showing at the 2009 Southern Scuffle. The team was tied for eighth after the first day of competition and was jolted forward by Erik Schuth’s second-place performance in the 197-pound bracket on Wednesday. Four other Bobcat wrestlers placed seventh or better as Germane Lindsey (Cincinnati, Ohio), Clay Tucker, Jacob Ison (Batavia, Ohio) and Nick Purdue all turned in solid performances.
The Bobcats (6-0, 0-0 Mid-American Conference) earned a total of 85.5 points, placing them in sixth out of 31 teams. The team finished ahead of No. 13 Kent State (7th) and just 12 points behind No. 16 Edinboro (4th). Ohio’s performance in this year’s Southern Scuffle highlights how much the team has improved from just a season ago when it finished 22nd in the tournament.
Schuth (Spencerport, N.Y.) had a great tournament while wrestling at 197 pounds, compiling a 3-1 record en route to finishing in second. One of the highlights of his tournament was a 6-4 decision over Michigan’s Anthony Biondo, a wrestler who is currently ranked No. 12 by Amateur Wrestling News.
“He’s just getting better and better every time he wrestles,” said head coach Joel Greenlee. “We’re proud of what he’s done and hope that he keeps improving.”
Lindsey posted a 4-2 ledger throughout the tournament, earning a fourth-place finish in the 141-pound bracket. He has now accumulated 16 victories in the 2009-10 season, putting him near the top of the team.
“I think Germane has really turned a corner,” said Greenlee. “He could be one of those guys who is knocking at the door of the NCAA Tournament to be an All-American.”
A native of Martins Ferry, Ohio, Tucker had a very resilient tournament. After losing his first bout, the junior rattled off six consecutive victories before losing the last two, putting together a 6-3 mark through two days of competition.
“It can be kind of a grind when you don’t win your first match,” said Greenlee. “But he came back and won six straight and gained a place…that’s great. It takes a lot of heart to do that.”
Ison and Purdue (Genoa, Ohio) were the other two wrestlers placing for the Bobcats, earning seventh and sixth in their divisions, respectively. Ison posted a 4-2 record at 174 pounds and Purdue compiled an even 3-3 record in the 184-pound bracket. Purdue now leads the team in wins this season, accumulating 20 thus far.
“Obviously we’re preparing for the MAC Tournament and we’re preparing for the NCAA Tournament, but we’ve seen a lot of quality competition and now we know that we can wrestle with anybody in the country,” said Greenlee.

Ohio Wrestling Signs Two Standouts
Bobcats welcome Michael Duckworth and Beau Wenger
ATHENS, Ohio- Ohio Wrestling proudly welcomes two newcomers into the fold for the 2010-11 season, as Michael Duckworth and Beau Wenger have decided to join the Green and White.
Duckworth, a native of Liberty, Indiana, brings with him a very impressive high school wrestling career. He capped off a 48-1 senior season by claiming the 171-pound IHSAA State Championship. While in his junior season at Union County High School, he finished as state runner-up in the 160-pound division.
In addition to his stellar performances on the state championship level, Duckworth earned repeated success at the NHSCA Nationals. He placed third in the 152-pound class in 2007, second in the 160-pound class in 2008 and fifth in 2009 while wrestling in the 171-pound class. He was a four-time member of the Team Indiana Gold All-Stars and placed in the top eight of the Ohio Tournament of Champions multiple times, including a first-place finish in 2009. He has also claimed multiple state titles in Folkstyle, Freestyle and Greco Roman wrestling while competing in various Indiana State Championship Series competitions.
"He is a very talented wrestler," said head coach Joel Greenlee. "He's won at every level he has wrestled at, from a young age through the national level. He's a guy that we're looking for to come in and wrestle 174/184 for us, and we think he's a real good one."
Wenger, a native of Navarre, Ohio, also had a stellar high school wrestling career. He brings a 96-16 career record and three sectional championships to the team. He finished third at the OHSAA State Tournament in 2009 while wrestling at 189 pounds. Just a year before that, he finished fourth at the NHSCA Sophomore Nationals.
"We think that Beau is a guy who has a lot of potential and has a great future here at Ohio," said Greenlee. "Both of these guys are good students and were near the top of their classes, so we're excited about that as well."
In addition to his impressive high school accomplishments, Wenger has earned multiple All-American honors. He was an All-American at the Disney Duals in 2007, 2008 and 2009. He earned All-American status at the Brute Scholastic Duals in 2008 and 2009 and also at the 2008 Salsbury Duals.
The Bobcats (0-0, 0-0 Mid-American Conference) will next be in action when they host Appalachian State, Cleveland State and The Citadel for the Bobcat Duals on December 4.
Seven Ohio Wrestlers Place in East Lansing
EAST LANSING, Mich.- The Bobcats had a very successful day at the 2009 Michigan State Open, with seven wrestlers placing in their respective weight divisions. One Bobcat took home first place and two others earned second, making for an impressive second tournament of the season for the Green and White.
The 'Cats started things off the right way Sunday, absolutely dominating the freshman/sophomore division of the 125-lb class. Gabe Ramos (Hopatcong, N.J.) finished in second posting a 4-1 record along the way. Finishing first in the same weight class was Bobcat freshman Kyle Ciccarello (South Euclid, Oh.). Ciccarello went undefeated in the tournament, winning all four of his bouts.
Tim Silvers (Eaton, Oh.) followed the 125-lb class with a success of his own, as he finished in third place of the 133-lb freshman/sophomore division. Silvers posted a 4-1 record on the day, including a 16-2 major decision over a wrestler from host Michigan State.
"Tim (Silvers) did great today," said head coach Joel Greenlee. "He's made some huge gains in the last year. He's moved up a weight class and he needs to keep working at getting stronger, but he has done great for us."
Germane Lindsey (Cincinnati, Oh.) and Darrin Boing (Northfield Center, Oh.) did a very good job in the 141-lb open division, as they placed second and sixth, respectively. Lindsey posted a 3-1 record en route to his second-place finish, pinning Matt Callahan from Appalachian State in just two minutes and 53 seconds. Boing accumulated a 3-2 mark during the tournament, notably winning a close, 7-5 decision over Vince Castillo of conference-rival Northern Illinois.
In the 157-lb open division, Clay Tucker (Martin's Ferry, Ohio) posted a 3-2 ledger en route to finishing fourth. His day consisted of three very solid wins (all decisions by five points or more) over competitors from Indiana, Michigan and Northern Illinois.
The Bobcats were again well-represented in the heavyweight class, as Andy Hartshorn (Reynoldsburg, Oh.) finished in second-place. He posted a 3-1 mark for the second consecutive weekend, besting Ivan Muller (Citadel) 8-2, Joe Fagiano (Indiana) by major decision, 16-4, and Wes Schroeder (Eastern Michigan) 4-2. He lost a close bout in the final of the open heavyweight division, 2-0, to Nathan Everheart of Indiana.
"Andy (Hartshorn) has wrestled really well the last two weekends," said Greenlee. "He and Germane (Lindsey) both placed second in their classes…it was a great performance by both of those guys today."
The next event for Ohio will be when it hosts the Bobcat Duals on December 4. Appalachian State, The Citadel and Cleveland State will be coming to the Convocation Center to square off against the 'Cats in Ohio's first dual-meet competition of the season.
Ohio Bobcats Compete Well at Hokie Open
Ohio produces four top-6 finishes
SALEM, Va.- The Bobcats put forth a very solid effort at their first tournament of the regular season, competing in the 2009 Hokie Open. The tournament began at 9 a.m. on Sunday, with 379 wrestlers competing in the day's events.
Placing best for Ohio was redshirt sophomore Andy Hartshorn (Reynoldsburg, Oh.), who finished 4th in the heavyweight class. He compiled a 3-1 record on the day, defeating some quality opponents in his charge through the bracket.
"I thought Andy performed great," said head coach Joel Greenlee. "He beat Dustin Porter who was a national qualifier at one time and was ranked as high as 12th in the country, so it was a great day for him."
Kyle Sanders (Columbus, Oh.) had a very good day for the Bobcats, posting a 5-1 record (including one pin in 27 seconds) to finish 5th in the 197-lb class.
"Great day for a true freshman," said Greenlee. "He wrestled well. We thought he was pretty good ever since he got here and now I think that he's starting to think he's pretty good as well."
Seth Morton (Canal Winchester, Oh.) performed very well in the 149-lb class, finishing in 5th when all was said and done. He posted a 5-1 record throughout the tournament, pinning one of his opponents in 1:39.
Ohio's Nick Purdue (Genoa, Oh.) competed well in the 184-lb class, finishing in 6th place with a 4-2 record that included one pin.
The rest of the Bobcats finished with good competition records, even if they didn't make it to some of the final bouts.
"I felt great about the whole team today," said Greenlee. "We had some guys really go deep into the tournament that didn't place, but they were 4-2, 5-2…so it really was a great day for a lot of guys. It was a great way to open up a year."
"I think we're pretty tough. We've got a great group of guys that are doing all of the right things and as they continue to do those things they will continue to get better."
The Bobcats will next compete at the Michigan State Open on November 15.

Ohio State Pulls Out 23-18 Win Over Northwestern
Three overtime bouts decide outcome; 'Cats to face No. 1 Iowa Sunday
EVANSTON, Ill. - No. 19 Northwestern took sixth-ranked Ohio State into three compelling overtime matches and won four bouts on the night but came up just short, losing a 23-18 decision to the Buckeyes Friday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The 'Cats return to mats against No. 1-ranked Iowa at 2 p.m. on Senior Day Sunday before turning their attention to their postseason competitions.
Friday night's much-anticipated 184-pound bout between No. 1 Jake Herbert (25-0) and No. 2 Mike Pucillo (15-0) did not come to fruition as the Buckeyes opted to send Pucillo out for the 197-pound contest instead. Herbert made Ohio State pay, picking up his 13th fall of the year in just 2:04 against T.C. Pendleton, giving the Wildcats an 18-13 lead in the process.
Through much of the ensuing 197-pound match, it appeared NU would enter the final match with the lead until Pucillo got the turn he was looking for on Northwestern's John Schoen, winning by pin with just 19 seconds to go to put the Buckeyes up by one.
In the heavyweight bout, Ohio State's Corey Morrison iced the win with an 11-2 major decision of NU's Paul Rands.
NU's fourth-ranked Brandon Precin got the home team off to a good start against the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week, Nikko Triggas, at 125. Although Triggas earned the first takedown, Precin reversed and was soon in the hunt for a first-period fall, picking up five back points on his way to a 7-2 lead. He did not relinquish a point the rest of the way, tech falling Triggas by a 17-2 margin.
Robert Joyce stepped in at 133 with the tall order of facing No. 3 Reece Humphrey. Joyce used two escapes to tie the bout in the first before both wrestlers exchanged penalty points in an intense match. Humphrey eventually prevailed, however, by an 11-5 decision.
At 141, Keith Sulzer picked up an early takedown but was only in control for 18 seconds before Jaggers scored one point on an escape. Jaggers spent the second period compiling riding time but did not score and opted to start down in the third period, looking for the tying escape point. He got it with 1:14 remaining off a restart, sending the match to overtime.
Just 36 seconds into the extra session, the official ruled Jaggers had gained control, giving him the 4-2 win and the Buckeyes a 6-5 overall advantage.
Ohio State (15-2, 6-1) also rested fourth-ranked Lance Palmer, instead going with senior Owen Schaefer to take on NU's Andrew Nadhir. The Wildcats sophomore was in control throughout the match, picking up three first-period takedowns and never allowing Schaefer to regain momentum. Nadhir remained on the attack, making sure his fifth consecutive win was a major decision for the Wildcats.
At 157, it was a battle between Northwestern's 14th-ranked freshman Jason Welch and OSU's 13th-ranked senior Jason Johnstone. With Johnstone holding a 7-4 advantage in the third, Welch notched the takedown he needed to get within one with 55 seconds remaining as his riding time began to accumulate.
An injury to Johnstone stopped the clock with 45 seconds showing and 21 seconds of riding time in his favor. He managed to ride out the match to tie it at seven and send the match to overtime. Just 30 seconds into the sudden victory period, Welch (20-7) dropped Johnstone for the win and claimed his fifth Big Ten win this season.
After a win by No. 2 Colt Sponseller at 165 reduced Northwestern's lead to two, Wildcats redshirt freshman Robert Kellogg faced the Buckeyes' Dave Rella at 174 in what proved to be the third overtime match. Kellogg looked strong early, picking up a takedown on the way out of bounds in the first half. Even after a takedown by Rella late in the second, Kellogg quickly escaped to protect a two-point lead.
But after a Rella escape to start the third, the Buckeye scored two with 50 seconds to go, giving him the chance to ride out the match. After a stoppage with four seconds to go, Kellogg made the most of his last opportunity to tie, rolling out from the bottom position to even things up on an escape at the buzzer, bringing the fans and the NU bench to their feet.
Each wrestler scored once on an escape in the first overtime tiebreak periods, sending the match to a second sudden-victory session where Rella managed a match-winning takedown inside of a minute after the start of the period.
Kellogg is now 2-2 in overtime matches this season.
