St. Marks Sean Boylan, Nick Schenk, Bobby Telford wins Independent Conference title for St. Marks
After a year of wrestling in South Jersey, and starting his sophomore year at St. Marks, Sean Boylan knows what it takes to win his 3rd Independent Conference title by pinning Nick Gatinella of Caravel Academy. "I had fun going into the Independent Conference Tournament but my real goal is to win my third state title I placed 4th in the Beast of the East Tournament last year and it helps me to stay focused on this season."
After an outstanding performance at the Beast in 2009 with a title, Nick Schenk is moving ahead of his goals, after a 14-3 win over Chris Donaldson of Salesianum for the 2010 Independent Conference Wrestling title last week and will look forward to the States at Sussex Central. " I have to stay focused no matter what the crowd does I always have to ignore them." Chris Donaldson of Salesianum my opponent was a 112 pound state runnerup has backed away so many time so I decided to put the pressure on to stay on him and to work on my moves." "At the Beast last year, my main goal had peaked at the right time, after Sherlock defeated me in 2008 and I defeated him at the right time, God helped me throughout the day." "Jason Bastianelli is an outstanding coach and really helps you with technic along with keeping on track of me and my grades." "After I graduate from St. Marks, I might take a year off and go to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado to train myself hard and to focus on my wrestling technique first then probably go to a Community College for a year along with training for Flo Nationals and maybe compete in vegas while training through the summer."
St. Marks Head Wrestling Coach Jason Bastianelli on his teams performance at the Independent Tournament: It felt better for our going 13 out of 14 in the in the medal rounds and right now our team is focusing on Tuesday." "It about us not any other opponent Michael Mauk at 189 stayed on the attack and had trouble with the holds and wanted to finish the match strong." " BobbyTelford is amazing here at the tournament he was 5th in the conference in his second year and is a heavyweight who has really done well."
Iowa Bound Bobby Telford after a 5th place finish in his sophomore year won his 2nd Independent Conference title after pinning Archmere's Tyler Foresta: "These past few weeks we worked hard in practice trying to fine tune our skills going in the state finals. Wrestling at Sussex Central High School has a huge gymnasium and is a big distraction." "For our squad we're going to wrestle hard along with scoring takedowns and to win matches. In my Beast final there were some hard things that I went through but had to leave it in the refs hands as I should have taken care of business the next time I see my opponent again." II was working on my homework upstairs in my room and I received a call from one of the committee members of the Dapper Dan Classic and offered my a chance to represent Delaware in this fine classic."

Former Sussex Central and 3 time Delaware State Wrestling Champion John McDonald in his 2nd year at Lehigh University
John McDonald, a former 3 time Delaware State Wrestling Champion from Sussex Central High School where he wrestled under current head wrestling Coach Phil Shultie, after deferring eligibility in his first year, is currently in his second year with head coach Pat Santoro at Lehigh University. While with the Golden Knights, John other credentials are as follows: recorded over 150 career wins, winning a junior national title in 2006, ranked third in his weight class and 24th nationally by Intermat. In his senior year won the Dave Schultz Award for the state of Delaware, along with 2 Fargo National Titles and winning a Beast of the East title.
"Coach Shultie has been a real inspiration to me as he arranges us to compete in open season tournaments to get us ready for next season." "He is always there for me and we talk on the phone and have a good friendship." said John McDonald.
In 2007-08, the Rehoboth Beach, Delaware decided to take a year off due to various injuries, didn't compete for the fall and winter squads. He returned to the mats for spring season and competed in various freestyle open tournaments where he placed third at the Northeast Senior Championship with a 4-2 mark. "I had 2 shoulder surgeries that have been bothering me the last 2 times." "I got my shoulders repaired and wrestled well after my injury, but wasn't at 100 per cent so far but I needed to regroup on what I have to do."
The Lehigh Mountainhawks opened up the 2008-09 season at Grace Hall where they defeated the Terps by a 21-15 , John made his debut where he won his first match by a 9-8 score over Brendan Byrne had battled with a lot of injuries as he struggled with a 10-11 record, at the Northeast Wrestling Duals in Brockport, NY, as Lehigh registered their first ever win as they defeated the highly ranked Cowboys of Oklahoma State by a 17-16 score, he pulled off a big upset of his career as he defeated Obe Blanc by a 4-3 score. At the EIWA's that was held at the Penn Palestra, John finished in 6th place where he faced defending national champion Troy Nickerson of Cornell in the quarter finals.
"Wrestling the Maryland Terrapins at Grace Hall was packed, we did better from last year and it was good to get my first home win and to watch the snakepit crowd erupt here at Grace and that is an experience for your life it was exciting for our squad then we won vs. Central Michigan we had an upseason and a lot of positives this year." "Our team wasn't the surprise for me I felt that we had the team to do it beating a top ten team this year, for me it was exciting beating Obe Blanc from Oklahoma State in the Northeast Duals at Brockport, NY." "I got an early takedown and he tied it up with a takedown on me. In the third period I was on top and rode him out and this is good as normal Obe was trying to get out and that was an exciting win for me."
"Wrestling at Grace Hall is the most exciting feel you would ever want to have you have 2000 people always back you up and they know a lot about the sport, you look along the Palestra, Lehigh University bought 1000 fans with them screaming and yelling and its a good feeling to have." "Coach Pat Santoro is a positive and upbeat coach, he expects a lot from you on the mat and in the classroom and is a humble person, same things go forBrad Dillon, John Hughes and Jason Kutz and the rest of the Lehigh Wrestling staff."
"Difference in wrestling from high school to college it is appears when you wrestle in Fargo while in high school but in college every match is go go go and in the Easterns Troy Nickerson is a national runner up, last year he finished 3rd I felt I was ready for him I came back with 2 good wins 3rd match I was winning 2-0 and for 5th and 6th I was put on my back and these guys want to win also I am majoring in Political Science."
In his second year at Lehigh, he is currently struggling with a 9-11 record as he defeated Mark Rappo of the University of Pennsylvania by a 8-0 score along with competing against some of the best competition in the nation.
"We came out wrestled Rutgers hard yesterday and finished up vs. Penn today in the 29-9 win and we will be ready for the EIWA's in 2 weeks at Stabler Arena on our campus." " I started off well early in the season and in the last couple of weeks I got into a bit of a slump like how a baseball player would." As I started off well in the last couple of weeks I was having trouble putting matches together as I tried to work through them and it's good for my seeding in the EIWA's." When we wrestled Rutgers yesterday at Stabler, my opponent is seeded in the country and tried to get out there and won." In my match vs. Mark Rappo went out there did my game plan wrestle like you can and work hard." I'm excited that we tied Cornell at Ithaca, NY at 15-15 in our conference I lost 5-1 to Troy Nickerson the defending national title in a controlled tight match as I'm wasn't pleased with the defeat but I did better in the match I hope when they come we are going to give them a battle our team is still mostly young Greg Strobel era guys and some of the Pat Santoro guys like Robert Hamlin, Brandon Hatchett stepped up for us and recorded the wins."

Former Caesar Rodney 3 time Delaware State Champion Alex Meade in his first year with the Oklahoma State Cowboys
Alex Meade, a former 3 time Delaware State Champion from Caesar Rodney High School in Camden, DE and after a redshirt year by competing in various open wrestling tournaments, knows what it takes to wrestle at the big level in his first year with the Oklahoma State Cowboys under current head Coach John Smith.
"School is going well for me even though I'm in my freshman year, while at CR under head coach Dickie Howell, I went 125-4, was a 3 time state Delaware State Champion had a lot of wins in my freshman, junior and senior season while seeded Number 1 in the country along with 2 Beast titles by defeating Frank Molinaro from Southern Regional High School in New Jersey and is having a good season at Penn State University in my senior, I defeated Nick Mendito of The Shore High School." said Alex Meade.
"I enrolled at Oklahoma State University where I can receive a good education along with the coaching staff in John Smith, Eric Guerrero, Ty Lewis and Chris Pendleton who I look up to as mentors and have helped me out to better my wrestling skills" "In my redshirt year, I finished 19-2, the season was a lot longer , I had a good year growing process that has help me for wrestling." At the Central Missouri Open I finished in 3rd place and Loper Open, I defeated my teammate Neil Erisman for the title and finished in first place in the Oklahoma Open."
The 3rd ranked Cowboys wrestle their home meets at Gallagher-Iba Hall on the Stillwater campus, Alex Meade made his varsity debut vs. Arizona State and won his debut: "Everytime I come through Gallagher-Iba Hall I have witnessed a lot of tradition along with some of the greatest coaches and wrestlers that have come out of this program." "The fans are really supportive of the program a lot and they travel to where we go." "I made my debut vs. Arizona State at home was very nervous at first in our home arena after that I have adjusted to the Cowboy Wrestling Tradition."
Twice during the season, the freshman was named Wrestler of the Week by the Big 12 Conference for upsetting some top bigger seeds in Dustin Schlatter of Minnesota 3-2 and Ryan Morningstar of Iowa by a 5-3 score. "When I wrestled Dustin Schlatter of Minnesota where I won 3-2, he came on strong as I never saw him for the winning takedown I circled my hips and got my 2 point takedown on the edge of the mat." "Wrestling Ryan Morningstar of Iowa and being at the Carver Hawkeye Arena was an experience that I'll never forget as I haven't wrestled in front of a big crowd of 11,000 the noise of the crowd really got to me I didn't let it get to me I focused on doing my job and won by a 5-3 score.
The Cowboys will be wrestling the 2nd seeded Cyclones of Iowa State University where the former CR star will be facing 4th seed Jon Reader at Ames, IA this coming Sunday. "The only thing that I have to do is to prepare to focus on what I have to do and to wrestle my match I want to do my job at 21-4."

St. Mark's without 2 starters finished in 2nd place in perhaps the toughest field ever at the holiday classic. Beast Champ Nick Schenk ran his unbeaten streak to 16-0 and Bobby Telford dominated all comers and also earned the most pins in the least amount of time award. Sean Boylan captured a silver medal making the finals of the Hurricane for the 3rd time in his prestigious career while Senior Matt Buckworth continued his burst onto the national scene by standing up high on the podium for the 2nd time in as many weeks. Sean Dolan placed 3rd in a tough weight class adding valuable team points throughout the weekend while Michael Mauk took a strong 4th with a great day of wrestling on Tuesday. Lastly, Beast Finalist Tyler Pendergast finished out the tournament strong with a 5th place finish. Next up for the Spartans is a trip to the VA Duals after a week of training on January 8th and January 9th in Hampton VA.

The Express-Times
BETHLEHEM | A junior at Nazareth Area High School, Zach Horan can now cross a Bethlehem Holiday Wrestling Classic title off his to-do list.
Horan prevailed in a battle of two of the nation's top 125-pounders Tuesday night with a 3-2 win over Sean Boylan of St. Mark's (Del.).
His gold-medal performance led the Blue Eagles to third-place team finish.
"It feels good to win this because it's something I haven't done yet," Horan said. "That leaves states and the Beast of the East."
Blair Academy crowned a staggering six champions -- including a win in the night's featured final at 189 pounds -- and cruised to the tournament team title. Coach Jeff Buxton's Bucs amassed 238.5 points.
St. Mark's was second with 172.5 points. Nazareth finished third with 172.
Horan-Boylan was one of the better final matchups. But the best undoubtedly came at 189 pounds between Blair's Mike Evans and two-time New Jersey state champion Anthony Campolattano of Bound Brook.
Evans, who transferred from Cumberland Valley to Blair in the offseason, dominated Campolattano throughout the six minutes for a 7-2 decision. The defeat was the first for the junior from Bound Brook, who entered with a 100-0 record in high school competition.
"I knew he'd never lost and that was my goal, to give him his first loss," said Evans, a two-time champ at the Beast of the East. "I never wrestled anybody unbeaten before and that really excited me.
"Everyone knows 'Camp.' Now everyone will know me a little bit more."
The score was tied at 2 early in the second period when Evans maneuvered for the decisive takedown. The University of Iowa recruit added an escape and another takedown in the third period -- and was never threatened.
"I kind of figured he'd come out a little harder," Evans said. "I don't think he's ever had to brawl before. The kid's a great wrestler but I can't tell you who he beat. I don't think he ever had to fight like he did tonight."
Horan had to work a little harder for his title.
His takedown midway through the first period accounted for the only offensive points of the bout. Horan defeated Boylan 2-1 in the semifinals of the Beast of the East earlier this month.
"I was just looking for an opening ... he's not an easy guy to score against," said Horan, who is four wins away from 100 for his career. "This was a real tough weight class with a lot of good guys. I knew this wouldn't be an easy tournament to win."
Nazareth juniors Franco Ferraina and Ryan Krecker joined Horan in the finals, but both lost to Blair Academy opponents.
Ferraina was pinned in 56 seconds by Blair's Mark Grey, while Krecker suffered a 2-1 rideout loss to Bucs senior Jesse Shanaman. Nazareth coach Dave Crowell was pleased with the efforts of each of his finalists.
"That's a very good win for Zach and it's two weeks in a row. He wrestled well," Crowell said. "Ryan is tough to score on and he had a couple opportunities he just couldn't convert. He wrestled extremely well in the semis to beat Austin Sommer (of Northampton).
"And Franco took a big step, I believe. He made the finals and I've had a lot of very, very good wrestlers who never made the finals of this tournament."
The Lehigh Valley's other finalist was Colin Hedash of Northern Lehigh. Hedash won a 3-1 decision over Hazleton's Jared Kay in overtime to capture the 171-pound title.
Northampton failed to produce a finalist for the first time this decade. The Konkrete Kids, though, were the second-best finisher from the LVC with 150.5 points for sixth overall.
Liberty was right behind in seventh place with 137.
"We wanted, as a team, to be the top team from the Lehigh Valley," Northampton coach Terry Daubert said. "So that's a little disappointing. We've got a long ways to go."
Blair Academy champions were Max Hvolbeck at 103 pounds, Evan Silver at 112, Grey at 119, Chris Villalonga at 145, Shanaman at 152 and Evans at 189.
"I love Blair," Evans, the tournament's outstanding wrestler, said of his transfer. "Blair Academy is definitely the place to be if you want to wrestle."
Heavyweight champion Bobby Telford of St. Mark's won the award for the most pins in the least amount of time.

After 17 years of getting close, losing nail biting matches, having long bus rides home, and enjoying Friday night at the Olive Garden- but not Saturday night in the Colosseum, the 2010 St. Mark's Spartans have finally won the VA Duals. Heroes throughout the weekend ranged from every individual, but no star shined brighter the Spartans upper weights in the South Plainfield match as SO Chris Hemmerich fought off a headlock for 40 seconds at 152, SR Chris Shaw 160 pulled through with a huge decision, FR Matt Shaw registered a giant pin, and 215 Joel Mey wrestling with a potentially broken foot fought off his opponent to only give up a decision. This set the state for the 2 ranked HWT in the nation with the Spartans down by 5. Bobby Telford pinned SP's Bobby Sacks as St. Mark's won 30-29 over the # 2 team in New Jersey and would not look back. St. Mark's dominated Phillipsburg NJ and Nazareth PA on Saturday to win their first VA Duals ever. Definitely a huge feather in the programs cap after 3 runner up finishes in 97, 98, and 2009. For any parent, wrestler, alumni, coach or member of our wrestling family that has took the trip down to VA with the St. Mark's Wrestling Team- this title is for you. r
