South Dade Wrestler Brevin Balmeceda Wins Super 32 Belt!!
> On October 28, 2017, South Dade’s own Brevin Balmeceda became the first wrestler in Dade County history to win the prestigious Super 32 National Challenge and is only the 13th wrestler from Florida to accomplish this feat. The Super 32 is considered the toughest wrestling tournament in the country. The tournament was held in Greensboro, North Carolina where over 3000 wrestlers gathered to compete against the nation’s best and win the championship belt. Balmeceda’s weight class alone had 132 participates, many of which were nationally ranked. On his way to the national title, Balmeceda defeated 6 wrestlers by a combined score total of “54-1”, only surrendering 1 single point the whole tournament. Balmeceda defeated Harvard bound senior Joshua Kim from California 4-0 in the finals.
> Balmeceda is no stranger to success on the state and national level. He is already a 3x national champion as well as a 2x state champion in his short high school career but winning his 4th national championship at the Super 32 is definitely his biggest accomplishment to date. Balmeceda has already put together a stellar high school career for the 12x state champions, South Dade Bucs with an overall record of “216-15” and he is only entering his junior season. He is currently the #1 ranked junior in the country by Wrestling USA magazine. At this rate being the first wrestler in Dade County history to win the Super 32 belt is not the only record Balmeceda will set either. He is on pace to become the winningest wrestler in South Dade as well as Dade County history. “Brevin never ceases to amaze me. Each and every time people doubt him or tell him that he can’t do something he proves them wrong. I am a pretty hard person to impress but man he really impressed me with this title,” states longtime South Dade Head Coach and father Victor Balmeceda. “I just hope that the nay-sayers and doubters keep fueling his fire.”
